It doesn't look that bad. There doesn't appear to be any rust on the doors or anywhere else pictured. It also looks like it has deep 6s so the car was loved at one point. Convince the guy to sell it!

are 912's valuable enough now for a restoration to make sense? or would you have a $50k $20k car.

It does not make sense to dump a lot of money in a 912, yet, as they sell between 20 and 30K now but that car looks complete enough to have a really fun 'driver'. I am fixing bushing and seals and leaving the rest, T- shirts over the seat backs etc. and just driving that 1968 911S I drug out of a barn here in Tucson. Really a fun knock around car and 912's are lighter and more nimble and balanced than 911's. They really are glorified VW's in the finest since of the words.
Here is a picture of me just changing the throw out bearing and a trans shift seal, less than $200 in parts. Engine comes out in a 1.5 hours with a motorcycle jack and not struggling, every part is available. The new Porsches are better cars but not more fun and a lot more complicated.

A 912 might make a good base for a restomod instead of a stock restoration.
