I have an opportunity on a 2003 360 F1 w/ 40k miles for an attractive entry point and have come across the following when reviewing the service history from 2011:

    1. Belt service - good
    2. Replaced Clutch kit w/release bearing
    3. Replaced Sensor kit for F1
    4. Replaced Pinion for 4th gear
    5. Replaced synchros for 3rd and 4th
    6. Replaced shift selector
    7. Replaced engine and trans mounts
    8. Replaced starter
    9. Replaced all four lower control arm/ball joints
    10. Replaced one upper control arm/ball joint

Would you consider this to be routine maintenance for a 11 year old car with 40k or is there possibly something underlying here? Current owner claims it is a local, accident free car. I have the VIN if you can recommend additional research to conduct.

    Thanks

I wonder what belt service - good means. Was it a good belt service, or they left the old belt because it had a fairly recent date?

ball joints and engine/trans mounts seems normal (i'd be curious about the control arm bushings). clutch depends on the use, and you can hopefully tell how many miles are on it from 2011. Might as well figure out if the f1 is the updated version (is it an 03 or 02?).

    1) What was the date of the "Belt Service"?
    2) Was a new belt and/or bearings put on? Receipt and/or phone# to call and verify. Too much BS out there.
    3) Why did they replace 3rd and 4th gear and the syncro? Did the shift selector f#$ up? Why? That shouldn't happen.
    4) Is this from the PPI? Did you see the car yourself? I'd inspect it personally up on the lift and see this with my own eyes, the repairs that were claimed to have been made.

Doesn't seem totally abnormal but the transmission things might concern me and I'd price this into my offering. How does it drive now?

Everything other than trans looks pretty normal.

the transmission work is the only question I have. The front suspension on these cars is fragile, while some cars might go 80k miles, my own car's front end was shot at 50k miles.

Cm2 - I verified the belt was replaced in June 2011 and the car is 2002, not 2003 - my mistake. Only 3000 miles since service.

Vr- receipt was provided, tough to ask them to verify a service from 2 years ago but worth a shot. Your #3 is my biggest concern as well and haven't got a satisfactory explanation yet. Could it be the result of an inexperienced driver shifting up or down at an incorrect speed or rpm? Could there be any corresponding engine damage as a result? This is preliminary investigation prior to a PPI. The price is at least 10k below market so I don't imagine there's too much room for negotiation unless something is revealed at inspection that wasn't disclosed.

Mike - the roads can get rough and plenty of potholes up here so it doesn't really surprise me either.

I would read the sticky in this sub forum because there are a lot more things to look for

    Was the variator campaign done?

I will say the same as others have said, replacing the 3rd and 4th gear synchros is not normal for a 360 under 40k miles...

Regarding the tranny.. see what information they can provide to you.

I can't think of any way off hand that a funky tranny could trash an engine, but I can think of how mis-timed or mis-aligned shifts will trash a tranny/syncro. I'd think actuator check, shifter mechanism alignment, smooth shifts, checking the tranny fluid via the dipstick might not be a bad thing on the PPI.

I know that cars in Canada are a little higher priced than US cars. Sounds like the history is priced into it. I'm a big fan of what's there now. You can find fault in each and every car on the market if you look hard enough. Even new cars and these 3000 mile jewels. They all will have an issue in time. It's metal and plastic and leather, and each and every part of the car can be replaced with a new or used part. It's only a matter of how much you are willing to spend. PPI will give you an idea what's there now, and the likelihood of what it might need.

I agree with Curt. If the F1 was set up correctly there is not much chance that the driver could screw up the transmission -- unlike a manual where you can mess up the syncros in a hurry if you don't know how to drive it. Maybe the sensors went bad but that should throw up an F1 light. I would definitely get them to pull the transaxle screen to see what trash is in there -- they may not want to as that involves pulling the rear bumper. However if you are paying for the PPI then insist on seeing the screen with your own eyes.
