I'll be driving home to NJ from a work trip in Mass, and I may stop at Nardelli's for a grinder.

Anyone eat there? Any recommendations? Is it good?

I'm a foodie, so making an off-the-path excursion is up my alley...

Always drive by it on 84, but never been. If you are looking for a foodie destination, maybe try to go to New Haven for Frank Pepe's?

Had Nardelli's once and wasn't overwhelmed. Not bad, just not special. Perhaps I ordered the wrong sandwich?

Completely agree on Pepe's.....Best pizza in the world. Had 4 generations of my family in that place twice in my lifetime. One when I was to young to remember it (seen pictures) and once with my kids. Worth the trip from anywhere. Got to be the New Haven location though. they've spread out a little but its not the same.

NH for sure. When my friends and I were into audio we used to hit Take Five Audio every Thursday night (owners were friends) and top it off with a visit to Pepe's. That was before they expanded. Over the last few years we have hit Pepe's in Buckland Hill mall, Manchester and it's spotty. Sometimes it's as good and NH but we've had to send more than one pie back because it was under cooked or had the wrong toppings.

Of course, being a Philly boy, I'm prejudice. There are some awfully good pies made in Philly too. :)

Pepe's in New Haven (the Fairfield location is good but still not as good as NH) for thin crust Neapolitan style pizza.

Or, if you like thick crust Sicilian style pizza, jump off I-95 in Mamaroneck to go to Sal's for fantastic pizza made in that style. Cash only, though.

    Sal's Mamaroneck ?

I've been. Good pie, not great, but then I'm spoiled because I live by the best there is, DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies.

I did get the Nardelli's Italian Combo. It was good - definitely worth the stop. I wouldn't put it in the same category as White House Subs or John's Roast Pork - or even Primo Hoagies. When I was in Florida, I hit a place called Laspada's - awesome sub, very memorable - I thought the Nardelli's grinder was close, but lacked some seasoning...something needed.

Very easy to get in / out of. The shop workers were extremely nice. Both strong points for a return visit.

I love DeLorenzo's too! They too, have a great white clam pie - absolutely terrific. It has been a while since I have been. Used to love Pete Lorenzo's cafe (across from the Trenton train station - but I understand that that has been closed.)

I wrote 2 articles about DeLorenzo's - both the original Hudson Avenue location and the brother's restaurant on Hamilton.

As it turns out, both have moved out of Trenton - the place just got too difficult to deal with in terms of the crime.

Pepe's clam & bacon pie is easily worth 50-75 miles of extra travel time.

Louis lunch really isnt that good. 2 blocks down from it is prime 16 on temple st in new haven and they have bar none the best burgers ive ever had. Go for the cajun patty melt on a pretzel roll or try out the half bacon burger.

I think Pepe's has gone downhill since they started opening satellite locations. I'd rather go to Sally's (or Modern if you don't want to wait hours) these days.

Rein's Deli in Vernon, CT is a good stop on the Boston to NY route. I lived in Vernon and it was incredible how many times I told people where I lived and they said "that's where Rein's is".

My Nardelli's experience wasn't great...seemed like a huge grinder that was 75% thick bread. Bleck.

If you can wait till you reach Manchester Ct area on rt. 84 try Rheins Deli! Overstuffed sandwiches, freshest bread and rolls, great cold cut selection.

For some reason it isn't as visible (to me anyway) from the highway now as it used to be before they widened that section of I-84. What exit is it located on now?

I remember the days in the late 70's when that section of I-84 was called I-86 and there were only two lanes in each direction all the way into Hartford.

Nardelli's subs aren't special. Just regular pizza shop subs.

Pepe's on the other hand is well worth the trip.
I used to stop by there on my drive back to Jersey and stock up with four meat lovers pies and a couple of others.

That's because they moved across the street to a new plaza. It's the same as it always been.
