I'm a new Ferrari buyer (have owned several Porsches) that is looking to buy a 458 spider. My local dealer has a car I like; Ferrari certified, one owner, 2013 model with 4k miles. Not much discount, if any, on what a new model would cost.
What do you guys think? Should I pull the trigger or just order and wait for a new one?

next year 458 will be replaced, unless you do not care about loosing your money I would buy used...prices are dropping very very fast here in Europe on 458Italia

If you have a chance to get one anywhere close to sticker, it's still essentially a great discount - unless you want to wait forever - if it's spec is good, it probably is hard to pass up.. Look on eBay and DuPont and they are still asking 40k plus over sticker in many cases for a used one..

Unless you have to have a 458 Spider with exactly everything you need then buy used, that is what I did with my coupe. I contemplated ordering a new 2014 458 coupe but was able to buy a 2012 at a nice discount off a heavy MSRP car of $301,000. I would never have spent $300,000 on a new coupe with depreciation in mind so used was the wise choice for me, I am very happy with my car and decision. My car had 3900 miles on it when I purchased the car and literally looked brand new in the wrapper....

The key is to find a car that is super clean, and close to the options you would spec as a new build and you dont need to wait a year+ either.

Pull the trigger if it has most of what you want! You can drive her NOW rather than waiting forever. I've had three Porsche 928's over the years and the Porsche Experience although pretty cool is absolutely NOTHING like the Ferrari Experience! Enjoy her!

Bought a used Spider with 852 miles and paid a premium for the car with MSRP of $325k. The car is very heavily optioned and has things that I probably would not have ordered (like NAV cuz my Garmin works just fine).

Glad I bought the car last March and would do it again. Over 12k (s)miles and one set of new tires. could not be happier.

At 68 I just don't know how much longer I will be able to drive a Ferrari and really enjoy it. carpe diem.

    Life is good.
Life is better driving a Ferrari.

Personally I would never pay MSRP for a used car. I would order one new and just wait. With winter coming up and depending on where you live there may not be much good driving weather left (as you can tell I live in the midwest but YMMV).

As you can see, responses vary so it comes back to you. Some consider age, i.e. "if not now when"?. Others, the "next model", who knows when and how it looks/powered. Do you value time or money more? Can you save enough to make it worthwhile for you? Incidentally, do you like the car , I suspect one important consideration. Are you "compromising"? Etc, etc, etc.

If you like a Spider, used is as good as new 99% of the time. especially those with low miles, good records, and sold by a Ferrari Dealer. Best

It depends on the deal. I bought my '13 458 coupe, with 500 miles, mint condition, just the right colors and options, CPO, for $10k below MSRP. Couldn't pass it up. I would hesitate to buy used for *over* sticker, but I understand that for certain models/options people are willing to pay the line-jumping fee. Good luck!

I would get new so you can have the car exactly how you want it. Will cost you more but when you are spending this much you should have it exactly how you want it

The 458 will not be replaced next year. I speciale will probably run through 2015. I dont see the 458 replacement coming out till 2016 or early 2015. He also wants a spider which the replacement spider wont be out for a while. I would say buy new!

I had the opportunity to buy used when looking at the coupe but decided to wait for a new one made just how I wanted. In my opinion, there's nothing like getting a car made with everything that you want. How long is the wait at your dealer for a new spider?

Depends when you can get allocation on a new Spider. For many first time buyers, the wait is still long or you need to buy an FF, Cali, or used F-car to move up to the front of the line. For myself, I couldn't find a used low mileage Spider with desired color and options on the left coast that wasn't $30K+ over sticker. I was lucky to get an allocation this past May, my Spider is at FNA in NJ as I type. Even if you are first in line, you may not take delivery of your Spider for 6 months. If you live in a warm climate and can drive your Spider through the winter, may be better to jump on the used model.

You will always loose money on a modern car so you have to decide your comfort level with it. To me it boils down to enjoy it now with pretty darn close to what you want vs. wait for exactly what you want. The new model will likely cost more and be pretty rare at first so you will still have time when it comes out.

Exactly. The interval period to actually take delivery of the 458 Spider replacement adds an extra couple years for the majority of us who haven't bought a dozen cars from the dealership and aren't the first 3 in line. My dealership only gets 3 458s a year and 2 F12s so you can imagine the lengthy wait for many of us.

IMHO it depends of what you feel about the virgin concept.

If you don’t mind to have a used car, getting some specifications that you probably wouldn't choose, get it now and you’ll be able to immediately enjoying it. With 4k miles is almost new.

However if you want a car with all the details dreamed by you, wait for the right one. And the right one is your brand new Ferrari. Nothing can be more tasteful.

In my view some cars are like women, especially Ferrari cars. I like them without any possible kind of addiction. I hate bad surprises.

And do not worry about the replacement of 458 Spider. There’s a lot of water to run under the bridge before we get there.
