    Doesn't seem to be any broadcast of the announcers which is really too bad. On the good side I met Ro Gro, Davide Valsecchi and Jackie Stewart at a lotus PR event Thursday night! Romain was a sour puss but Davide was super chatty.

    My son was first on the scene of the Sutil crash when they let fans walk the track. He got these carbon fiber souvenirs. He had run the the long way from turn 14, through turn 13 and turn 12. :)

    Where were you and how high up were you?
    I went last year and was very frustrated trying to shoot through the fence since my seats weren't that high.

    Thank you for the kind words. The close-up photos were taken east of the turn 6 grandstands on a hill with an old Canon manual focus big white 800mm lens converted to work on my Canon 5diii. I was a bit away from the track but above the fence. Manual focus with an 800 using a monopod to take photos of these high speed cars is a bit of a challenge, but a lot of fun. There was a group of us at this location with most using 400mm lenses and probably a fair amount of cropping.

    The panning shots and many of the later photos were taken during qualifying from Turn 15 grandstand row 23. This appeared to be the lowest row in our section that gave a view above the fence. These were taken with a 24-105mm lens with a lot of cropping.

    I live in Austin so I have been to the track several times which helps finding good spots. I feel that practice and qualifying are the best times for photography.

    Thanks for the response.

    I took pictures of the Porsche race last year from T15 probably between row 25-30 and avoided the fence.
    My seats for the race, though, were probably around row 8 so the fence was a huge issue. I had my camera on auto focus for the first two days with little luck so for the race I switched to manual and it worked out.

    The best part of T15 is that they aren't going too fast and the cars are in view for a long time.

    This year I planned to sit high up on T6 but am too busy right now to have a weekend full of fun so I didn't go :(

    I'll have to try out some of your tactics and spots next year!
