Ah, thanks, I live and learn. Interesting, are the tensionsers similar.
Some say that its tensioner bearing failure in the Bb that causes belt failure,

There is the theory that as the 308's morphed into the 355's with sky high revs the belt sevice became critical at 5 years or less, whereas before it was not so critical. Maybe true here?

TR motors seem to have high or higher than boxer redlines. Although I dont remember many threads about BB or Tr belt failures, other than neglect. Some even seem to go 10 years. I guess its not an endemic problem as it is in 355's and 360's 550's. We seem to have to worry more about diff carrier failure, maybe that is the fuse that blows before the belts can fail. ha..

We will wait for professor Newman to chime in.

512M has the same configuration and they pull like a freight train to 7500rpm. I was thinking of upping the cut-off on the last one I did to 8K. Belts dont concern me.

The rear diff is the welded type, one day I hope to see one that already has an M one or mine! First two pics are from this donor engine for the boxer the other 3 are not. This other carrier is the perfect example of why you need to remove the left side support to unload the carrier bearing. This is from the testarossa I put the M engine in. Looked good looking at it from the rear while still installed.

Have a look! Surprise! (they never break though ;))

I know Paul quite well, so I take every opportunity to turn the knife, on the phone, in person, and here sometimes.
Believe me he gives as good as he gets, and we laugh our heads off.
He is a true Tifosi, but never tell him I said that.

    Exquisite!
Lucky for him I was there, just to slap him around a bit and bring him back from the dark side.
    Top bloke, lovely family.

Stripped the CIS from the top of the engine. I also removed the left carrier support to unload the carrier and had a look. Its all good right now so back together it goes. Looks like some rodents made a home under the fuel distributors at some point but no harm done.

I made several measurements and came up with templates for the manifolds im going to make that allow carbs to be bolted directly onto a testarossa engine (and I might make a few extra sets ;)).

Awesome Paul, I remember you mentioning this project before.

I know I'm a little aesthetically minded sometimes, but I notice that all these 'boxer' motors (TRs, etc) have those deep galleys that are such dirt catchers. Mine holds water or whatever else gets in there, always the first to look gunked up. Apparently makes nice little mouse apartments too!

Have fun with this project. Making a 'few extra sets' of those manifolds is not a bad idea!

The standing water in those pockets does more than just use up the q-tips your wife keeps in the bathroom drawer. The main block studs that hold it together let water wick along them so when someone like me needs to split the block during a rebuild I spend a day pressing it apart rather than 15mins. Theres an easy solution but it'll be another 30 years before the next mechanic is relieved when he overhauls the engine.

A little update on the M motor Paul put in my testarossa last winter. I put about 4000km on the new motor with absolutely no issues, which is remarkable considering the scope of the project. The only change I would make would be to install the "race" version of the Fuchs exhaust instead of the quieter one. I love the sound...it just ain't loud enough. We have the rev limiter set at the recommended 7500 rpm but I keep running into it because it's still pulling so strong! It's one hell of a motor. For the client putting the testarossa motor into a boxer my advice is to go with a TR motor (unless an M could be sourced). For what it's going to cost for the whole project the TR motor is a nice step up for not much money. You can rest assured that Paul will deliver the goods on your project. Good fun and good fortune.

During the turbo conversion they added an oil cooler up front. They were creative with how they ran the hoses. One line goes to the bottom of the dry sump tank the other to the top. Im not 100% certain there was much flow with the arrangement they had. They moved the condenser to the right and had the cooler in front of the left fan. Ill move the condenser back now that the cooler is gone.
