930 Turbo Carrera

The Christophourus February 1975 issue's article on the turbo included a photo of the 3 liter engine with an unusual air filter housing that had a small circular air intake that was different than the production cars. The article also included a graphic from Porsche that compared the performance and torque of the new Porsche Turbo 3-liter engine 950/50 (K-Jetronic) to the Carrera 2.7-liter engine 911/83 (MFI).

Absolutely! Glad to see them still around.. I think Stoddard and Brumos are the oldest "enthusiast" dealers left now that Vasek Polak's is no more.

 

I believe these may have been available in through the Sports Purpose catalog. Some were Cibie while other were Marchal although interchangeable in the same housing.

 

Here is the daN forces check at the annual control of a 75 930. daN forces are close to kilogramme. The control was done with 1/3 of fuel and the controller on board but without spare wheel and jack.

Joe, thanks for posting the new photos. Despite the sad condition of this Turbo Carrera, it was an excellent way to start this thread as it’s a reflection of the demise of so many of these great cars. In the U.S., there’s no doubt the attrition rate for 3 liter 930’s is very high as they were the one’s most molested, abused, left for dead or returned to Germany. I looked at a white ’77 930 a few months before I bought my ’75 and it was severely neglected as it had also been in the elements for 10+ years. It was once a stunning and very rare 930 with non-optioned sunroof, driver’s only mirror and tartan dress inserts on the black sport seats.

Interesting in that this does appear to be a U.S. 930 with sugar scoop headlight bezels and large rear bumper pads. In addition, it has the small secondary tail vent indicating "no A/C" so it may have been “A/C delete” if it was delivered to the U.S. market. I’ve never seen a U.S. Porsche 930 factory delivered with “A/C delete” but perhaps they do exist.

The U.S. Turbo Carrera (sugar scoops, front bumper parking lights, and large rear bumper pads) featured in the ‘75/76 Turbo maintenance manual (turbo decal section) also has the RoW rear bumper reflectors.

This is GLP 870N (’75 -0015) from the Dec ’74 car magazine. Nice catch on the 25 years decal but there's not enough resolution from the magazine's photo to determine if it is the English or German version.

Note that Japanese delivered 911 and 930 at that time also required sugar scoop headlights per Japanese regulations. They also had the orange front parking lights, so this isn't always an indicator of US-spec. Similarly, Italian had front parking lights but in white.

However, I believe the Japanese delivered 911/930 still had the narrow bumperettes at least through 1976. The rear tail light lenses were the orange RoW style. Japanese regulations also required two mirrors.
