Was there ever a good or great democratic PM in the last 50 yrs?

OK not my original idea, still interesting question, let's try and keep this out of P&R

I always thought PET , but my elders might dissagree. P.Martin did a lot of good for the economy layed the foundation as Finance Minister (while stacking-up his personal corporation)

 

I was a fan of Paul Martin.

The only liberal worth noting.

Trudeau had the right idea and the spunk needed to stand up to the US and was good for Canada at the time.....but his legacy IS being abused today....so he falls short in my book.

Trudeau was about as far as one can get from democratic. As a card carrying communist, he realised he could not get elected on an NDP platform, so he co-oped the Liberal Party. This is not unlike Alison Redford in Alberta who was elected as party leader by the teachers union. The Alberta teachers union signed up as members of the PC party in large numbers so that they could vote at the party leadership convention.

In all his dealings, personal and professional, Trudeau was an autocrat. He put in place an unworkable constitutional amending formula. He created a charter which put the SOC in charge of the country over the the elected representatives. He was the guy who sneered that MPs were nobodies 50 ft off parliament hill.

Everything he did was calculated. He never spoke to and despised Jean Cretien as an illiterate neanderthal, yet had him in his cabinet because he needed the non-intellectual franco vote.

I too was enamoured by Paul Martin - before he became PM. Then in the cold light of day, it became clear Martin was nothing more than a sock puppet of Moe Strong and the PowerCorp gang - he was devoid of any of his own ideas or ideals. He was just the little boy who just wanted to be PM and he didn't care who he stepped on (Sheila Copps) or had to make whory deals with (Belinda Stronach) to get/stay there.

Not to change the subject, but I've got some great "falling down drunk" pictures of Trudeau junior from New Years 2012 down here. They will come out during the next Federal election!

Quite the spectacle. Justin has his mommy's substance abuse issues. Comparing Justin and Rob Ford, at least for Ford does not pretend to be something he's not - i.e. heterosexual. His wife Sophie is such a compliant beard. She will ignore just about anything Justin does in her quest to get 24 Sussex Dr as home address.

BTW, her real name is Avril Phædra Douglas Campbell. She dreamed up the "Kim" handle during an acid trip when she convinced herself she was re-incarnation of Kim Novak.

I was referring to the early days of PET - the later part of him was unfolding.

His initial entry was what Canada needed, and set a good ground work thought out the 70s ....but some how it became another ponzi scheme by the 80s...but I don't him accountable to that. He had the right idea as a visionary.

Democracy today is nothing more then a secular religion. People think democracy is the answer to everything. That is completely false. In a democracy people quickly figure out they can vote themselves freebies. 51% votes to rob 49%. The US is hailed as the greatest democracy ever, a falsehood believed by those with 0 historical knowledge(ironic products of the "free" educational system democracy has supplied). When the US was formed only 10% of the population at max was allowed to vote. This ensured those who had a real stake in the game(ie had something to lose) made decisions. Once the US began introducing democratic reforms ie the public election of senators + giving every one the "right" to vote, things began turning south. Within 1 generation of everyone voting(democracy), the industry has vanished, , massive debt incurred, huge taxes etc. Depression, major recessions, constant military conflict, enormous expansion of government. I mean this isn't a theory, it's simply fact what "democracy" has produced. The irony of the US is, they are now taxed 50 fold more by their elected government then the supposed tyrannical King George. Infact no monarch in history has ever been able to tax people as much as modern "free" democracies do.

Total tax in Canada, all levels + hidden eats up to and over(for some people) 50% of income. Medieval serfs lost 10-15%. Cognitive dissonance causes people to ignore this fact and instead tell everyone how free they are.

You will *never* have a good leader or government in democracy. Hence why the OP is asking has their ever been someone decent in 50 years? No and there won't be in the next 50. Voters must be bribed with bread(social transfers) and circus. The richest areas in the world today are none democratic city states. All large scale "democracies" in 2013 are in economic and social decay. Canada is not an exception. In 6000 years of recorded western history, not a single democratic institution has survived. You can't vote yourself utopia.

On a positive note, Ferrari fans should be glad that Harper signed free trade with the EU. 6.1% reduction in autos from Europe starting in 2015. Canadians were paying 20-25% in various taxes on EU made automobiles to subsidize(buy votes) a domestic auto-industry(that produced garbage) that ended up dieing regardless.

In the 6,000 yrs, if there are records of this , when was their a democracy ? And when was their such a benevolent democracy , and compassion around the world more than what the United States of America developed?

And Trudeau did not set back Canada 50 yrs, it's his predecessors that let the horse out of the barn.

What are you going on about and what does cognitive dissonance have to do with knowing we are taxed to death and at the same time knowing the extent of our freedoms?

It's seems obvious from your other threads and posts you are anti establishment, certainly anti cop and now anti democracy.

Instead of going on about the evils of democracy, which to this point of history is the most successful, what system do you propose we use?

I hope it's not one with serfs, cause I'm sure they would give their left testicles to be in our shoes.
