seriously? TopGear has become the mouthpiece of Mac? relayed this relayed that. absolutely ridiculous. speak on their own accord or shut up for good. situation is getting dumber by the day.
I have seen that reported elsewhere today but this is not accurate information. They've never run a timed lap on slicks at the Ring and the car is faster than the 6:47 claimed on the Pirelli road tires that were developed for the P1. >8^) ER
TopGear Magazine is a news reporting entity - this was news McLaren shared with them that related to the video released today and it was reported in the article TopGear published to go along with that. Do you expect something more formal, I am confused? >8^) ER
REMEMBER: this car is the work of a company that hasn't won a World Championship since the last century AND that got caught stealing industrial secrets from Ferrari and getting fined $100m. They have never designed or built an engine either. In order to sell their cars, they reduced the number produced.... Strange tactics..... The good news is that because of the advent of both the McLaren and the Porsche, Ferrari went further and further in their research and development of LaFerrari to ensure that it was head and shoulders above the others. So thank you McLaren, for that! Why is there even the remotest discussion about this car.....
Not really. Turbos will be forced upon us only because of the emission regulations. Other than that, a turbocharged engine leaves a lot to be desired.
I don't want go into politics but if European Union will fall then all this emission norms will be invalid too?. For example in France party leading in polls wants France to leave Europen Union.
May only world champions build a car? I hope you wouldn't say Ferrari is sacred? Than has for example Pagani also no right to exist? AND: It's crazy that a company producing metal cans had become F1 world champion. Is it allowed to do that? Even Ferrari controls the sale by limitation of the car production. Maybe because it's a great product and McLaren makes a lot of pressure to the established brands with it? And let's be honest: our discussion here in this thread makes a lot of fun. So thank you McLaren!
Well you did say "cue the naysayers" after you talked about a far-fetched, complicated equation which apparently proves the P1's lap time. Someone was bound to question it, even if it wasn't me, there was never any doubt that someone would come in "nay say" your stupid theory. I could say "Cue the worlds biggest McLaren fan boy" at the end of most of my posts and you would more than likely chime in. Nothing clever about it Erik. Two more McLaren fan boys that claim to "ignore" my posts but still talk about me amongst themselves anyway? That's funny.
McLaren P1 confirms sub-seven-minute Nurburgring lap | Autocar So, fast, but not the fastest on the Ring.
They'll give us the average speed but not an actual lap time? This is getting very sad. If they had a time worth mentioning they would have mentioned it.
The 'ring lap time BS will never be answered properly until all three cars are brought together on the same day and run under the same conditions over the exact same stretch of road. And when it's all over there will be one winner and two others that will roll out explanations of how the test was unfair/car had issues/winner brought a ringer/BS.
I have a feeling only Porsche would sanction a car for such a test. And I claim this purely because, disregarding their true full potential, due to the 918 unique advantages over the other 2, namely 4WD and 4WS, it would most certainly be the fastest in the hands of a car magazine tester that has not spent miles and miles testing the 3 to their limits. That is, it would be the easiest to drive fast, especially on a bumpy track like NRing.
You don't have to believe what I write. I'm not here to lie and have a fairly decent track record of knowing what I am talking about when it comes to McLarens. If that's not enough for you or anyone else I really don't care. Make up whatever silly story you want if it makes you feel better. >8^) ER
I don't think so. Porsche tested the 918 on the Nurburgring, released a lap time with a video showing the car achieving said lap time and that's all there is to it. Porsche now has a record lap time of 6:57. No one can dispute it, blame the weather, driver or any other BS. When all is said and done the Porsche 918 Spyder has an official lap time of 6:57. Meanwhile, McLaren won't release an official lap time but will release an official average speed...? It's like a running joke at this stage.
No, they've given you a figure that they exceeded in both cases. Better than 7:00 and better than 111 MPH. That could (and does in fact) mean something significantly better than it offers on the surface. Maybe they will never say more - maybe they will wait to see how this game plays out and then show their hand. It's all up to them. Complaining seems to be all that you know how to do. >8^) ER
The running joke is that some of you are so damn fixated on a performance element that is so easily manipulated it isn't even funny. Did you read Ford's response recently to why they won't be publishing Ring lap times? Did you read the report about all the changes made to the GTR Nismo to allow it to run its 7:08 lap? Do you really believe that's the first time this has occurred? The whole process is a bit of a joke meant to grab a headling - the results generated aren't nearly as relative as some of you want to believe. He's right - same track, same day, same driver using production cars is the only method for proper comparison and I think the one thing you and I can both agree on is that is quite unlikely to occur. >8^) ER
At least someone has to do the math exactly, when it's about seconds: The Nordschleife = 20,832 m 111 mph = 178,599 km/h (+0,1 km/h related to Porsche?) = 49.61 m/sec Laptime = 419,91 sec = 6.998 min = 6 min 59,9 sec So if this is what they say, it's under 7 min...
BTW, are they using any kind of a locking differential on the P1? I'm asking this because it looks a little bit nervous in those slides, like a open diff car.
It looks like they just, just slipped under the 7min barrier as I had hopefully anticipated, but they must be disappointed that it is slower than the Porsche on this track which represents more real world conditions. On a smooth flat GP style race track the results will probably be reversed, but anyway you look at it, disappointing and they are forced to fall back on we achieved what we set out to achieve rather than we blitzed everyone. Or looking at it another way, the Porsche is simply quicker.
Like its younger sibling, there is no LSD in the P1. It utilizes their same Brake Steer technology - something they developed for Formula One and then was subsequently ruled illegal. >8^) ER
