I'm a fan of them too. Which is why I think that they should be allowed to stay.
In the past the lesser teams had to live up to the standards of the frontrunners. Now those at the top have to meet cost driven restrictions designed to benifit those at the bottom. Something antithetical to the pinnacle of motorsport.

    OK, Good! :)

    At least we've got 107% back! ;)

Anyway, I think those at the top *are* the ones driving the RRA and attempting to cut costs! Even they recognize that 2 (or even 3!) test teams and unlimited testing etc was becoming unsustainable, even for them. They even agreed to limit tunnel use and the amount of compute power they can throw at CFD solutions etc.

The sport is led by the big guys, as it should be - They're the ones with 5 permanent seats in the SWG nowadays after all. [The minnows aren't happy about that either, but I see the logic.]

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Too true.
My suggestions are pie in the sky and assume that everyone wants F1 to be the pinnacle of motorsport. That is clearly not the case. Those in power want F1 alive and well but primarily as a profit making entity. Which is, of course, their right. I just wish it were different.

Excuse me if I'm repeating an anecdote but back during prohibition there was a speakeasy/crooked casino in NYC run by a rather notorious lady who'd greet her patrons with a loud "welcome suckers!". They came in droves.

May I suggest that over the entrance to each F1 venue and at the start if every F1 broadcast a "welcome suckers" banner be displayed?
    ;)

Ian, notice in 'my' two tier suggestion and unlike F2, GP2 or even the Chapman (winner was March or Tyrrell ??, I'm not checking...), I never mentioned less bhp for the minnows.

I want a full grid AND I want the Team Osella faction to have a remote chance of a podium/win.

Blasphemy, I agree. Don't care a lick. 27 cars on the grid please, and all parade laps to be held prior to the race. Not during. ;)

    ;)

Nothing wrong with some good ol' fashioned pie in the sky BS'ing - We seem to do a lot of that , at least in the off season.....

But, you really don't feel F1 remains the pinnacle? Does anything else float your boat in quite the same way?

I know I've been called an apologist more than once, which is fine, but that you've got to design it, build it and take it racing is a large part of it's appeal to me. Not to mention prove to Bernie you're serious with a $30MM (?) bond before he'll even talk to you!

Sure, there was more "diversity" back in the day, but did that actually make for "better" racing? Outside of the screaming Matra and similar, I honestly don't know. I do know we were lucky to see much overtaking, more than a small handful of cars on the lead lap, and most of the field broke down......

The races may be "boring" to some but they remain incredibly close and the engineering (particularly next season) is pretty damn impressive stuff, to me anyway.

Again, I hear you, but outside of the top 3, maybe 4, teams there's not a lot of profit being made; Not by the team owners and certainly not by the track owners/promoters - If the latter could ever get their act together Bernie would have to listen, but they prove over & over again they can't agree on anything. Let alone present a united front to fight back a little. Sure, I'd love to see more of the revenue come back versus servicing CVC's debt pile, but maybe that could change some with the long awaited flotation? [Incidentally, assuming that were to happen, would you buy in?......]

    Ouch! ;)

I'm not sure the 100's of thousands who spend their hard earned on tickets, or the tens of millions who watch on the box would agree. ;) Outside of the Olympics & World Cup it's the biggest sport on the planet - Is the entire world made up of suckers? [Don't answer that! ;)]

    Cheers,
    Ian

No answer needed I'd say. Just ask P.T. Barnum or H.L. Mencken.

I remain skeptical about F1's profitability. On paper the parent teams may not be making money but given what's spent on salaries, goods and services, many, many someones are making rather nice livings off the sport.

I think it was Tyrell, but haven't checked either. ;)

You didn't mention less power, but less weight! Amounts to the same thing IMO - A BOP by any other name - Anathema! ;)

    :)

Can't have 27 cars on the grid anymore unfortunately. The FIA safety wonks would pass out!..... Pre qualifying? *Maybe*.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

How about 7 teams with 3 cars/drivers each? It won't cost 50% more to add a third car due to economies of scale...engineering and adminstrative costs would be spread over 3 cars instead of two. Advertisers would get 50% more exposure and probably much more camera time.

More likely to have better racing among 7 well financed teams rather than 10 or 11 teams where the last 3 or 4 cannot compete.

Current F1 setup is boring. Something has to be done.

Got to figure out how to get financially sound sponsorship by Porsche/Audi/VW/Lambo, Toyota/Lexus, Ford, Chevy, BMW, etc. into the sport.
