As a matter of general disassembly and doing-it-right, I'm having my Dino transaxle refreshed by European Autowerke. He is an ex-VRM (Vintage Racing Motors) principal which is the company that Mr. McCaw (AT&T Cellular,. recent $M35 GTO purchase) owns to support his Ferrari racing habit and is the third largest Ferrari collection in the world.

Here Bernie briefly explains the action of the gearbox.

Others here have claimed it takes 150 hours to rebuild a gearbox, Bernd examines everything for being within spec and only replaces those items he finds below standard. Costs to this point have been under $1100 in labor plus parts but we do have final assembly to complete.
He knows his craft, has done it numerous times before and is an uncompromising professional. His father was a machinist in Germany and he has restored several Dinos in the past few decades, working on my cars since 1993.

I could not recommend a more qualified or competent person to rebuild a Dino gearbox.

With gearbox on bench, Ron Lusardi at Superformance and me rebuilt my gearbox in 6hrs replacing all bearings and syncros.

Whoever took 150 hours possibly spent 145 hrs figuring out how to put it back together.

I love Ron! You are lucky to be close to him over there! I am sure Berne is tops too- he is equally distant from me as he is in Wash State and I am on the East Coast! You guys have all the luck!!

I rebuilt mine with Dennis McCann and I agree on the 6 hour figure. When we were done I said "Is that all there is to it?" A lot less complex putting it together than I thought after looking at the parts diagram.

Agreed on the simplicity of the gearbox. Despite the vast array of pieces they really only go together one way with no special shimming or tolerance considerations. So assuming that you have no left over pieces and everything fit then you have assembled your gearbox correctly

what entails a gearbox rebuild? new synchros? new 2nd gear? bearings?
so what are the typical parts costs?

I have an L, it has a forced lubrication system, thus a bit more complex.
Just as in an E, replace anything that does not meet standards.

It all really boils down to previous owner(s) care and maintenance (lubricant changes),
and hopefully not the 'usual experts' that used vast amounts of orange silicone and have clogged up the box.

My L was missing a shim and was run that way.
Result, all gears slapped endlessly into each other, and locked up the needle bearing cages in them.

All bearings should be replaced, unless really impeccable, but in reality cost is not an issue.
The synchros, once again, it depends on the condition, and if so lucky to have driven it pre-teardown, then it will be clear what to replace.

    Regards, Alberto
