Very valid question...some call it patina.:) It's quite surprising how much corrosion these coils shows despite being placed in a well protected environment with no direct exposure to road dirt and water. I doubt the original paint job was of any particular good quality and maybe condensation due to heat cycles played a contributing role to accelerated corrosion. I will treat my coil with a layer of Epoxy primer followed by a two component auto lack. This should keep the coil in good shape for while and hopefully make it easy to get the label to stick....

    Peter,

one layer of primer and two layers of RAL 9005 (satin matte black) is perfect to restore the original factory look.

Carefully remove the original paint/rust, then check for damage at the bottom. If there are small holes at the bottom edge where oil weeps out you need to be careful, the original insulation oil is hazardous to health. If you coil has a similar damage, you need to drain the original oil, solder up the holes, then refill the coil with a good high voltage transformer oil such as Shell Diala S.
Photo below with rust damage and coil after restoration.

    good luck,
    Adrian

Remove the screw and copper shim located within the beige spark terminal tower, then you can empty the coil by turning it upside down and wait for an hour or two (do this outdoors and empty the coil directly in a bottle or other container which is airtight. The original oil most probably contains PCB considering that this was standard in the sixties, so take care when doing this).

Refill the coil using a small funnel, take care to use a dedicated transformer oil (a very low viscosity oil which has very good insulating properties). Hint, if you talk to your local power company (or the local service guy) they might sell/give you a small amount of Shell Diala S or other type they use for their transformers. You need less than 60 ml of oil for refilling one BZR 205 coil.

Thanks for the excellent guide to coil recovery Adrian! I did not imagine that it was possible to save such a corroded coil...very nice. I'm quite optimistic that I won't have to go down that road. I will make an update when I have glass beaded the coil.
