I've posted here that my 85 QV won't start. I'm 99% sure it's the battery. I know I could change it myself but I frankly just don't have time and I'm missing some tools like a wheel hanger tool to get the front wheel back on the car. I've decided to just flat bed the car to my mechanic and let him take care of that and a few other small issues. The concern is that I'm missing my tow eye.

It's a tough time of year to get work done and my mechanic has an opening tomorrow. Hence I'm jumping the gun and called a flat bed for 7am tomorrow. His shop is 4 miles away so I'm trying to deliver it before work tomorrow.

Here's the question; How the heck does the tow truck operator pull the car up onto the flat bed without a tow eye? I know people here actually prefer to use straps attached to the front wheels but I just took a good look under my Mondial and the whole belly of the car is flat /covered metal. I'm concerned the straps - once looped around the front A arms will pull onto the coach work due to the angle of the toe rope/straps when the car is on flat ground and being pulled up to the bed.

Anyone have direct experience with flat bedding a Mondial without a toe eye / using straps? I'm starting to wonder if I should hold the tow until I can get a tow eye. It might mean my Mondial sits until after the new year though.

Normally I'd have more patience but I just got the car a few weeks ago and I'd like to get it running again so I can move on to the winter cosmetic restoration of the front seats. I don't want to start that cosmetic stuff until I have a comfort level on the non starting issue. I'm sure it's the battery but you never know.

So anyone here think tow straps are OK for a tow?

FWIW, The car is bone stock on metric rims and tires. I got it onto a Uhaul trailer with no clearance issues when I bought it, but did so under the cars own power.

    Thanks,
    David

I wouldn't do it. Something's gonna give and/or you'll sacrifice the chin spoiler.

All that hassle and risk just because you don't have wheel hanger tool?

Besides, dragging a Ferrari by its front A arms just makes me shiver...

I changed all four tires this weekend on my '85 without the tire hanger tool. It helps to have it but wasn't that big of a deal.

Someone else will have to chime in on ways to load the car.

I'm sorry you having such a rough start! Hopefully, the problem is just the battery.

Are you sure you don't have the towing hook? It should be holding the spare wheel in your front trunk. I personally would only use that to put on a flat bed.

I'm feeling the same reservations. I am about to cancel the flat bed. I'll wait for the tow eye.

I don't have a tow hook. It's also missing from the spare tire too. I ordered the proper (but aftermarket) part for that. (With the knob on the end)

I don't have the best back. I know I could fumble without the wheel hanger tool but blowing out my back isn't worth it! Just changing a wheel with normal studs is already not very back friendly. I'm leaning towards getting the tow eye and flat bedding that way.

You need the tow hook (ask me how I know).

Contact Ricambi, they can get you one very quickly.

Can someone post a picture of a wheel hanger tool? Never heard of this? Why is this necessary?

There's no oem part for a tow eye. I called then. Only the Hill engineering option at 150. I bought scaledetails for fifty instead. Hope it fits!

Don't worry, I'm betting that Stephane will take it back if it doesn't fit.

Just fun & games, in the world of sales.

Sweet .... Relax and enjoy the "process", one step at a time. You have a bunch of folks that are right here to help you, should you need or desire their help. Learning never ends, and that's a magical form of immortality!!! Enjoy the never ending "Ferrari ride of growth". :):)

Thanks Bill. I'll get it sorted. Whatever it needs, it'll get (and then some.) Isn't that what being an enthusiast is all about?

Well, if all the "measurements" are correct, then yes, that would be a proper wheel hanger.

I think if the tow operator pulled it onto the bed from the rear you can attach to the A-arms and not hit any body work. I've towed both of my 308s that way without issue. I wrapped rags around their tow straps both times to keep my freshly powder coated a-arms looking good. No issues.

You can raise the tire to the hub. Even with the "hanger" you still have to pick up the tire. With the wheel dolly you don't even have to do that. Use your floor jack to lift the car, remove the lug nuts, and use this wheel dolly/jack to handle the weight of the wheel for you!

When you are ready to put the wheel back on roll the tire/wheel dolly to the hub and bolt it back on.

Pretty clever solution if you have back issues

That is indeed quite clever. I'll pick one up (pun intended).

Hey, for just $79, it makes sense for me to add that to all the tools in my garage that I hardly ever use :):)

This one is for the t, $104, I would think it would fit QV too....

128705 TOWING HOOK : Ricambi America

But if Stephane sold you one, I am sure it will work fine and it is not a part that should wear out!!!

That looks like a group buy opportunity...get some machined from a hardened alloy or stainless steel for half the money.
