Traveller, would you mind posting who the Ferrari dealer is? The fact that they would try to pawn the car off with such deplorable paint in the first place, does not say much (actually says a LOT), about what they think of their customers. If the paint jobs on many of the new Ferrari's is so bad, they have to be repainted/blended, from day one, that customer will not be able to say, the car is all original, no paintwork. Sad.

this is outrageous. i would hand the keys back to the dealer and tell them to keep it or send it back to the factory - i don't care. i don't want it if it's not perfect! especially at this price point! anything less than perfect is unacceptable. buying a Ferrari should be a joyous experience - not an excruciatingly painful one. i'd rather not have the car if it's going to cause me this much stress. good luck.

Recently I've seen a new Jag F Type up close and looked at some new Aston's. No orange peel. Ferrari should be able to do this too.

That is the point. They don't care because we, the buyer, clamour for their products and will walk on broken glass to accept a car painted with a brush. We are the fools which is why I am trying to get others to join, without success I might add, in bringing this to the factory's attention.

Every Spider I look at, just walking past, has appalling peel on the inside of the B pilar, by the rear window, every one and surely buyers can see that before even beginning to see it elsewhere.

It seems that many have no problem sounding off about how bad this is; shouldn't happen on a 300K car; etc. etc. But when it comes to trying to do something about it.. No shows.

The only way to eliminate orange peel on a car is to sand and polish. All cars will have this appearance. Some have more than others. All "custom" paint jobs are finished off with sanding and buffing. It is very hard to get that look as sprayed. PPG, BASF, AXALTA, and Axo Nobel are the leading suppliers do OEM finishes in the world. All companies work hand in hand with manufacturers to provide acceptable auto finishes. My company car is a Ford F 150 pickup with really bad orange peel. A high end car should have a flawless finish, however the technology will never produce the look of a sanded and polished paint surface. The best thing is to have the car professionally polished and that will give the highest DOI.

I don't think you or anyone were forced to buy a Ferrari. How could you suggest something like that. These cars, although limited production are still mass produced and not every car made by every maker is perfect.

Was in a Mercedes dealer the other day and it was pretty bad on some of the AMG cars too. I think its the water based paint that the environmental control freaks have imposed on manufacturers.

I have contacts at PPG in the US. Maybe I should loop them in on this issue. I am sure they would like to know the issues you have found with the paint finish.

Water base is only the color. Clear coat is solvent and hi bake. Only waterborne finish on Ford is trucks, all other Fords are still solvent. Water has been used for several years at the OEM's.

When they deliver a large % of cars in a "defective" condition then a class action would be a way for a large number of people to bring claims. If it costs $3-6k to fix the paint on a new $400,000 car, there is a problem that needs to be dealt with.

And after getting a 3rd party, to redo the paint/clearcoat, you can no longer say the car is exactly as it came from the factory. Wouldn't that qualify as diminished value? Guess there's no worry about Ferrari North America, EVER, coming on this site to address customer's concern's. Quick enough to take the customer's money, and even quicker to throw them under the bus. Sad.

A few shots of the flattening which demonstrates just how terrible the clear coat was as you can clearly see the peaks and troughs

I wonder if the factory just forgot to finish the paint process on the car.

The orange peel is so severe.

On my Cali, I noticed the same paint imperfection but only on a small strip where the license plate lamps live. I can forgive the factory for not finishing the paint in that location which is only seen when the trunk is opened and one looks up in this spot.

On my brand new 458 spider, the paint is pretty darn good. I looked at her paint carefully for a second time after seeing this thread.

I am sorry to learn about this otherwise stunning car

To ruin your day, have a look on the inside of the the B pillars, just by the rear window!
