I have requested the thread closed. Just as themayor did with his "through with Ferrari" thread.

This thread has veered off topic in several different directions.

I had hoped we would continue his discussion which had 80,000 views.

    Unfortunately, we digress.

I presume the moderator is celebrating the holidays.

Simple fact. You can not even see any but a few of his last 200 posts.

Which would not still be happening if you would not keep moving it in several other directions.

You can see the mayors last 250 posts if you know how to use this forum. You obviously don't.

We will have to agree to disagree.

    Happy Holidays!

I think he means because you're not subscribed, and can't see the comments in their original context on P&R and other places?

MBATR, I'm not done with Ferraris because my wife and I took ours to Coronado, had wine, beer (me) and pizza al fresco at the Hotel Del Coronado, and then drove across the Coronado Bay Bridge on a clear night with the city lights below.

I don't care that it has paddle shifters (I drove a stick for years, and rode motorcycles for years more- I know and love the difference, but enjoy the DCT in a different way), or that the manufacturer essential leaves me on an island to figure the car out with the help of my friends here. I don't even mind going to Google Satellite view to check on available parking areas before I go somewhere.

I'm not sure I'll like the future turbocharged models, but I know the sound of mine has encouraged me to drive without the radio on for more than a year just to remain immersed in the experience. Oh, yeah, I like driving fast, too. I know other cars are faster, but it's a Ferrari, a Ferrari. Who could ask for anything more? Others may disagree, and it's always possible I'll mature into different perspectives, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it right now. My wife can tell how much; she encourages me to drive it, even though she closes her eyes during some of the more masculine acceleration times...

When did I bash Apple? I stand behind any American company that invests in technology.

It is true that Apple is marketing driven. Underneath the Skin, Macs and PC's run the same hardware (Ram, GPU, CPU).

For instance a Retina Macbook Pro with 32GB Ram will set you back nearly 4 grand. A PC with similar spec will set you back less than half that.

For fun I found the replacement harddrive for my Mac Pro on ebay for $79.99.

Called up Apple and they placed me online with a "genius". Asked how much a replacement drive was and they quoted me $500 including installation. I offered that I could simply buy the drive 3rd party, the Genius then told me that that would be an inferior drive. Even with the drives being EXACTLY the same. I let him know this, he said Apple charges more for quality checking.

    79.99 for a 2TB bare drive

Or 499 installed by a Genius.

Just for fun, 32GB for my Mac costs $1,799 according to the rep.

You can find 32GB on many online sites for less than $400.

And unless you have stock in Pixar, (Co created by Jobs) the idea the graphics are only good on Macs is ludicrous, even in the late 90's.

The most photorealistic movie during the Dot Com bubble was a Japanese/American movie called Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

The movie was made up of a Server Farm using nearly a thousand PC work stations. The Graphics blew away anything a Mac at the time was capable of.

Even today, you are more likely to see some variant of Linux or PC's running rendering farms. You simply get more computing grunt for your dollar.

What I will say is that Apple invented the idea of the modern connected smartphone.

They took an existing idea and perfected it. No other company has made it so simple. And even though I am from a background of open source, you have to sit back in awe aty the scope of Jobs ingenuity in trhe idea of the smartphone.

Until you want to expand. That's when the walled Garden concept falls on its face.

Apple puts up too man y barriers for no reason as to simply piss you off. I got rid of my iphone solely for hatred towards itunes.

To not have drag and drop in this day and age is simply inexcusable.

What I really appreciate from American companies is the ability to place products successfully in the market. We invent a lot in Europe. But if you're going to be successful in the market, you need to master the "American principles of product selling". The same counts for Apple, I really appreciate their marketing innovation.

They didn't invent the technology, that's true. But they had the competence to build an user friendly and highly emotional product.

To remind: Ferrari did not invent the sports car. But they made an emotional product out of it. They adapted the American way of product selling successfully... ;)

I'd say the genius is in the software and or the marriage of that software to the hardware. I permanently switched from the windoze world to the Macworld around 2002. What a revelation. No more living with the frequent crashes, the slow restarts, having to run and update zone alarm, anti virus software, etc. The time I saved, and the absence of headaches made the cost of Apple's products not only seem cheap but free as I value my time saved much higher than the cost of the equipment. The fact that the equipment is way cooler and better designed in almost every way was a bonus. But hey, everyone values their time differently.

Of course Appple is not for everyone just like Ferrari. Buy what you like.

MAC = upper west side NYC. When I walk into a Mac store I get a sick feeling.

They think there "stuff" don't stink.

I didn't say that their products didn't work, didn't sell well, or didn't add something to the equation that made them better.

What I said is they didn't invent the original products or come up with the original ideas of the many products they make a lot of money for them today.

Ford did not invent the car.

Boeing didn't invent the jet airliner.

Edison did not invent the first electric light.

But, if you ask people who are Appleholics, it's a bit shocking to them that Steve Jobs was more of a marketing genius than electronic genius.

    The TRUTH????????

Well mr the mayor... You did first state this…

Not much to do with real product innovation?

C’mon! This is flat out wrong.

    GUI?

    The iTunes platform?

    The iPhone?

    The Mobile App Store?

    The Ipad?

Apple upended the music industry, the cell phone industry, and the PC industry (where are all those notebook/ netbook computers?).

Jobs’s genius was putting the technology together in ways that others couldn’t foresee. That’s somewhat different and unique.

Yeah... It was done with advertising. It wasn’t actually better and cooler. (heavy sarcastic tone).

    Please!

Case you guys didn't get the memo, Steve Jobs is DEAD.

Apple was too before Jobs came back. No do overs this time.

    Now we will see.

Please indeed. Jobs was a great marketing genius. What's wrong with saying this?

    Other great marketing geniuses.

    Ray Kroc
    Adolphus Bush
    PT Barnum

    All great people.

Kroc did not invent the Hamburger
    Bush did not invent beer
PT Barnum didn't invent the side show

All took another idea and raised it to a new level.

Some of you guys think Jobs sweated over a hot soldering iron personally placing every diode in an Apple 2. Um... no.
