I know, and I didn't say that you said that. ;)
For me your statement is absolute correct.

What I try to underline is that it is also very important for each company to have the capability to transform a technology invent into a usable product and to bring this product successfully into the market, marketing innovation is an important discipline, essential for survival (an inventor is usually always a bad seller).

And Apple is leading in marketing innovation! Additional Apple is very talented in recognizing market trends AND they have the size to set market trends. Good or bad? I don't know.

I admire companies which have gotten such a high market dominance like Apple by - yes - by marketing innovation (bad news for the Appleholics).

But on the other side I'm always really careful what such marketing driven companies want to offer me. I don't like it when companies want to push me with their hyper short product cycles, their pseudo product innovations and their strange marketing promises.

    sent from my MacBook Air...

Nothing wrong with saying that. Of course Apple was/ is good at marketing. I wasn't debating that.

I was debunking the view that Apple's success is due to marketing as compared to innovation.

    *That was your inference.*

Relative to its size for a consumer product company, Apple spends very little in advertising. Substantially less than Samsung.

Sorry Jeff, but wrong again. For example, you can not post a search link here like you tried to do there.

Yes Sir, you can not see the vast majority of his posts so you have no clue what he is saying except through fog.

He was combative, argumentative, demeaning, rude, and disruptive in his posts.

He was also given many, many opportunities to change his posting style, which he ignored completely.

    But you haven't debunked it.

BTW: never confuse advertising costs with "marketing". Ferrari never spends a dime on TV or print advertising. Are they not great marketeers?

This would make an interesting thread in itself. :)

I'm thinking this tread is the most meandering Fchat thread of all time. So far we've talked about Ferrari's, Apple, real estate, Politics, marketing, and now banned users.

Why don't we just change it to X28's catch all of stuff I'm thinking about now? :)

not really Apple's innovation. Lisa failed completely, Macintosh was a poor seller - so poor it was one of the reasons Jobs left. At that time, Atari ST was probably the biggest seller in the GUI market - and it was less than 1000$ in 85', compared to 2495$ for a 128K Macintosh - Atari had more memory and was a faster system too - it also had color.

It was revolutionary with regards to music industry - as software, it was probably the biggest pile of steaming excrement I have ever seen(it was the PC version). I got rid of my iPod a month after I bought it - couldn't stand iTunes. Replaced with one of those no-name MP3 players that worked out of the box.

improved versions of what was already available for years -the force multiplier was the App store and relative ease of development for the iOS - something, btw, Jobs didn't believe would work.

Not even close. Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center pioneered both the GUI as we know it, and the mouse. Apple "borrowed" both the GUI and mouse from PARC. Xerox was a genuine innovator of PC technology, but they couldn't market their way out of a paper bag.

You might not recall, but Apple tried to sue Microsoft in the early days of Windows over the Windows GUI concepts, but lost the suit because it was identified in court that Apple didn't invent the windowed GUI, they used Xerox ideas and design just as did Microsoft.

What about all the child labour Apple uses in China? This thread has yet to touch on China's human rights issues. Apple lovers will argue that it give their products a handmade old world feel just like a Ferrari. But Apple products have way to many electronic nannies now days and have lost the experience. I for one would love to see the return of the little metal plate to ground yourself before hitting the on switch.

    I'm so done with Apple!

What the heck was this thread originally about anyway? Does anyone remember?

Apple did not borrow the technology from Xerox. They purchased the rights to it for stock. They commercialized it in the marketplace.

But this is silly. A lot of people hate Microsoft and a lot of people hate Apple. I'm sorry I mentioned Apple. I apologize. I also sold all my Apple stock so I have no interest/ allegiance in their success. I still buy their products because I like them. I understand that other people like other products. Buy what you like and let's try to talk Ferrari. Please?

Fifteen Bucks for a Silver subscription & $50 for Rossa. I think it's worth it. With Silver you get access to the B&I and P&R forums as well as Silver, and with Rossa, you get to learn the secret handshake, and you get to put your name in the hat for a drawing to use the Rossa F-40 on rotating weekends (although we really haven't seen it lately - no one's quite sure where it's gone to).

OK, fair enough, but the point remains that Xerox did the innovating and breakthrough designs, not Apple as you suggested. Apple bought the rights and marketed the ideas - great marketers, not quite so great innovators as many believe.
