A US-spec '81 GTSi has a thermotime switch (#3 in the diagram on page D57 of the Mondial/Mondial QV shop manual) but it also has a second thermoswitch, #2 in the same diagram. Where is this switch located, is it the switch that's set int the thermostat housing at the front of the engine, and if not, what is that switch?

Yes, item 2 on page D57 is the 115652 thermoswitch mounted to the US thermostat housing:

The corresponding text on page D58 is particularly mangled because they (mis)used the word "bonded" (instead of something better like "actuated" or "fired"), and they called both item 1 "electrovalve" (really the cold start injector) and item 4 "electrovalve" (which is a pneumatic electrovalve controlling the cold-start air valve).

The text on page D58 should say something like:

"When the coolant temperature is below 12~18 deg C, the thermoswitch, item 2, is closed which allows the cold start injector, item 1, to be fired/actuated during starter motor cranking when the thermo-time switch, item 3, is also cold/closed. When the coolant is warm (above 22~28 deg C), the thermoswitch, item 2, is open which prevents the cold start injector, item 1 from firing during starter motor cranking (regardless of the state of the thermo-time switch, item 3).

And I very much appreciate your demangling - many thanks.
