Any thoughts on Audi Q5?

    My wife and I are expecting our second child any day now, and have started casually shopping for something with a little more room. Her current DD and our usual family road trip car is a Lexus IS250. Very nice car, but rear seat room is way on the small side. With a rear-facing car seat in place in back, I can not fit in the front seat, as it has to slide almost all the way forward.

    Anyhow, my wife has really taken a liking to the Audi Q5, despite my trying to steer her towards something way cooler and more practical like perhaps the new Ghibli, a used 360, or a collection of two to three vintage British cars. We went and test drove one last night, an S-line Prestige model with the 3.0 V-6, and now she REALLY likes it, if you know what I mean. ;)

    Anyone have experience with these, good or bad? Also, are there any other competitors you would suggest? I am kind of wanting to check out the RR Evoque and maybe the new Porsche Macan.

    My friends traded in their A4 for a Q5 with the birth of their first kid. They love it. Wi-fi is pretty damn cool option you can get. They did get the fully loaded model, I think the Premium Plus.

    They've had no issues except for her rear ending someone the first few months of ownership. They've had it since beginning of summer.

    the Macan is built on the same chasis and the S costs ~$12k more than an SQ5. 0-60 are 5.0 for Macan S and 5.1 for the SQ5. If I were in the market for another SUV it would be the SQ5.

    BTW the Q5 is the best selling Audi model line in the US.

    If you want a Macan they will not start arriving in the US until April or May. And there is a waiting list so it may be several months before you can get one.

    Congrats on your new child when it arrives.

    I have an Audi R8 V10 and it has been a good car. Since it is a different model not sure what that means for you if any thing. I suspect any Audi would be okay.

    My freind who wns a European repair shop says the BMW electrical system fails at about 4 years. This was the car my wife was looking at. He recommended any Lexus alhough he would never see me for repairs they just run and run. That is what she did and is happy. About
    $14K less expensive with many more features and options included.

    I would avoid anything British. I have owned 4 British cars and have not had good luck. The sad part is they are always great looking and fun to drive.

    I owned a 360 and a ferrari F430 in the day. They are wonderful cars but they can get expensive even with general maintenace. I currently own a 458 and it has been easy to own and it is still a Ferrari. I personally think it is not as good a drivers car as the 360 and 430.

    The new 2014 Vette has a European supercar look and it a great driver. Reliable as an anvil and very easy to afford. I am not a vette fan but the 2014 is changing my mind.

    Also the Lamboginni Aventador is just a blast to drive. It has about 700hp. I have not owned the Galardo since my 2010 model but they are catching Ferrari on driving enjoyment but perhaps not the prestige of ownership.

    We have had Audi's for 15 years; currently an S4 Avant, and an R8. We think highly of them, and have not had maintenance issues as some have. That said, they are costly to repair (electronics) so absolutely get the extended warranty right upfront. And if buying used, make sure it has some factory warranty remaining, with good service records, so you could extend the factory paper.

    IMHO, the Macan, based on the same platform, will cost too much additional for what you get, except of course the badge, if you need that… ;-)

    Very interesting information. I did not realize the Macan was based on the Q5. That would make the price difference even harder to swallow, especially after a short trip through the infamous Porsche option book and embroidering a headrest or two. ;) I think I will just save my Porsche money for a 981 Boxster one of these days. The Macan is a sharp looking little SUV though.

    Back to the Audi, I was playing around with the online builder, and it looks like for just a couple thousand above the price of a pretty loaded 3.0 Q5 Prestige, you can get a similarly equipped SQ5, as many things that are optional on the regular Q come standard on the SQ. I am thinking more and more that the SQ may be the way to go, since my wife wants all the gadgets anyway...I may as well try to squeeze some fun and horsepower out of this deal!

    Let's assume a MSRP of $62K, what kind of price should I be looking to actually pay? Are they dealing much on these?

    Get the Q5 w/TDI diesel engine and you will love it. My wife has a MB GL350 w/Bluetech diesel and loves the torque and fuel economy of the oil burner over her former gas burning SUV..

    You should check out the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland or Summit. I was sure I was going to buy a BMW X5 or an Audi Q5 but I ended up buying a V6 Grand Cherokee Overland. My wife and I thought it was much nicer than either German and it was a lot less money.

    The backseat of the Q5 I road in was horrendous. Might as well been two planks of leather covered particle board. Take that for whatever it's worth.

    I also second Jeff328. I just spent a week in a Jeep GC limited V6 and loved it. Night and day over last gen. GC's that's for sure.

    I've been shopping for a q5 as well. Invoice price is on NADA and other sites. Way, way below what they want. So far, they don't want to budge more than $1500-2000 off, even on a 2013. All of seem to have the Prestige package. The dealer that I have mainly been in contact with claims I will have to wait until March to even get a car, ordered today.

    I tried to get my wife to go look at the GC, but she doesn't have any interest in it. Once she gets it in her mind that she wants a particular vehicle, it's like a heat seeking missile. You can't distract her with anything else!

    Nice find! The link did not work, but it does say in the site a 6% discount on new, after 6 months. I don't think I can get my wife to wait that long though. Maybe Audi will take my PCA membership? lol.

    The real question is whether you want the contrasting stitching embroidering for $3000 or the virgin silk embroidering for $5000. The latter cuts the curb weight noticeably, I've heard.

    I'd like to go virgin silk, but can probably only afford to get that on the handbrake lever. Otherwise I'd have to give up floormats, and wouldn't be able to afford to have them leave off the interior door handles and replace them with a small piece of cloth.

    Haha I'm currently having the same issue with my girlfriend! She's looking in the same realm, and is interested in the Mercedes GLK. But here I'm thinking of what else she could buy for $40k :) Go figure.
