I skipped over a few pages, so this might not be news, but Ferrari's website does have a brief "get well" page for Michael. It states that Ferrari is in contact with the family.

From what I understand, it's now a bit of a waiting game with constant monitoring.

The Doctors will be wanting to see his condition settle and stabilise, with various medical parameters no longer fluctuating.

At the moment his body/brain is still reacting to the initial physical trauma, hence the various swellings and bruising. Once the reactive swelling starts to recede then the healing process can be begin and the doctors will have a better idea as to how he is doing and the best course of action to take.

The fact that he is still with us at the moment is a good sign but there's a long way to go yet! If there are no complications then we can expect a lengthy period of there being little change in his condition.

My thinking also, unless he got really unlucky, one wouldn't imagine he would have had a cheap helmet on.

Knowing how Schuey likes to do things, I doubt he was just ambling along at the time.

Along with the velocity of impact though, you also need to consider the point of impact on the helmet, the angle of impact and the shape of the rock that he hit (a jagged rock will generally inflict more severe localised damaged than a rounded smooth rock as the impact point/points will be more localised).

A pretty good overview of where things are right now and some favorable rates of survivability. Hopefully the surgery that has been performed is only the intracranial pressure monitoring and not the decompressive craniectomy. No news is good news for now, as all Doctors can do is monitor vitals, respond to changes in pressures, reduce brain activity and need for O2 to the greatest extent possible.

Michael Schumacher at critical stage in treatment for head injury | Sport | theguardian.com

It was reported a high speed impact to the right side of his head. It was a hard enough hit to not only cause the brain to impact the inside of the skull on the right hemisphere, but it rebounded hard enough to bounce off the left side. This is why his injury is said to be Bilateral.

The resort said Schumacher was conscious when first responders arrived, although agitated and in shock. But Payen said Monday that after the fall Schumacher was not in a "normal state of consciousness." He was not responding to questions and his limbs appeared to move involuntarily, the doctor said.

This is pretty disturbing. What does this mean?

A symptom of serious head trauma is involuntary muscle spasm. Very first symptom is erratic eye tracking, difficulty speaking, agitation, and muscle spasm, followed by loss of consciousness. Sounds like he was partway through that process when they got to him, which was very quickly.

Changes in life happen too quickly.

Very worrying indeed, brings back all the memories of May 1994 again. I am concerned about blood clots, but he must be in the best medical care for hopefully a full recovery.

As an avid motorcycle rider and racer, this is one of the first things I look for in a fallen rider. People often think they are OK but when they have erratic eye tracking, I am dialing 911 immediately to scramble medevac....same with agitation or spasms. The older the person is with the injury, the longer it seems for the effects to occur; brains tend to shrink a little with age and therefor the symptoms of swelling may OFTEN take longer to manifest themselves in older people. I have seen fairly massive hematomas in 80 year olds where the injury was 8 months old before the signs of the hematoma started causing physical symptoms; an injury that normally would have been fatal in an active 20 yr old.

I did not know that! Thanks.

I also left out headache (sort of obvious with a head trauma), neck stiffness, and sleepiness (especially some time after the event when the person seems OK) as indicators of concussion/brain injury.

Knew a 50 yr old that bounced his bare head off the pavement in a low speed motorcycle off and suffered a concussion. Transported to the hospital, he was examined and released. 2&1/2 days later, he was flying his plane when he suddenly started to lapse in and out of consciousness...he was able to land the plane on a farm to market road, dial 911 and then blackout. He woke in the hospital having had ICP from a hematoma released through the ol' drill bit to the skull.

It has also been my experience that face planting injuries can cause more lesion damage than side or rearward impacts due to the unconformities of the facial cranium. Add some side to side shaking while the brain is shifted forward and the damage increases. This is purely anecdotal and based on my extensive time spent in e-rooms as patient or victim from various head injury accidents. I have taken my share of concussions over the years but nothing coma severe.

Hoping that MS can pull right through this and regain the life he had before falling.

    Registration required.

Hard to believe he'd be reckless with his son along, I have to believe it was a freak fall, which is easy to do, in variable snow conditions.
