    Hey everyone,

    I was quoted a price of 7k by my local Ferrari dealer for the belt service on my 87 TR. Considering their hourly rate is $125/hr, that equates to 56 hours of work! Does it really take that long to do the belt service (and that was all he quoted for, no water pump replacement, no valve adjustment, etc).

    50 hours is typical. Just the belt service parts are about $1000. Includes bearings, oil, fluids and belts of course. $7k is typical from a F dealer.

    when just the engine is out the you also just check the valve clearance and adjust. replace all seals.
    but why 56 hours??? the 7k I think is included material?

    Having now done it a few times I think I can take the engine out in about 6 hours, same to replace. Fitting new cam belts and bearings, about 4 hours.
    Oil £125
    Coolant £25
    belts £25
    bearings £150

    I enjoy doing my own work so I make a saving at the same time.

    I have suggested before that it may be cheaper to ship your car to the UK to have the work done.

    Here is an example of a typical Ferrari independent garage not too far from my home......

    There are a few "documents" at Scribd.com that deals with Testarossa engine removal and cam belt change.

    Go to Scribd.com and search for "Ferrari Testarossa engine" and look in the documents section (NOT books).

    Unbelievable -- gotta love how the British costs are all spelled out black on white and so much cheaper than in the US...try to get that kind of exact pricing from any US shop and you'll hear a range. Typically you never pay under the high estimate.

    Everything car related in Britain is cheaper, you can buy a 599 for 100K USD

    No matter what multiplier, show me a 512 belt service for 1.5K pounds, that is what - say $2.5K? They start at 6-7K with indys here...

    As a reference only, the Testarossa Service Time Schedule lists 16 hrs. to remove and reinstall the engine (includes adjusting gearbox and carburetion, checking water and oil, brake and clutch bleeding and recharging A.C.). 4.5 hrs. to change two belts, 1.6 hrs. for two camshaft covers, 3.7 hrs. for tensioner bearings, 4 hrs. for valve adjustment.

    Plan to do my first testarossa major this spring...

    For those who have done it themselves, assuming you have a scissor lift and all the needed tools, how many weekends did it take?

    Is 1 weekend to get it out, and 1 to get it in reasonable?

    I would think that changing the belts and adjusting the valves is a couple hours at best?

    I really don't want a diasasembled testarossa spewed all over the garage for the whole summer...

    My last engine service that I did was on my 355 last year and I will do my 512TR this spring. The 355 took me 52 hours, did not include the time to do Dave Helms gold kit, so I assume the Tr will take me a similar amount of time. With shop time being $100.00 to 150.00/hr and a min. of 1000.00 in parts 7000.00 to 8000.00 comes fairly quick :)
    Over the last 25 years of doing my cars (and a few others) I still find it fun and therapeutic and I have saved thousands :D

    I use common workshop tools, a couple of hydraulic jacks, an engine hoist and a home made dolly to carry the rear chassis/engine to the workshop area.


    It's a labour of love and patience but can be done by anyone with a little bit of car mechanic experience. IMO

    Bo, Doing the valve check/adjustment is going to take longer than 2 hours by itself. I usually spread the whole job over a month because I have never been in a big hurry but anything past that and you are procrastinating hahaha
    You should be able to do it in 2 weekends if you are wanting it done in that time given that you don't find something out of the ordinary that needs attention

    Thanks! Thats was much easier to follow than the workshop manual :).
