So the AC system needs to be drained and the compressor removed to get the job done?

Finally got some time to get under the car today and the AC belt seems to be ok. It's looking more like the tensioner on the alternator belt side may be the problem. The tensioner has black rubber streaks on it and the top side of the belt, which runs along the tensioner is rough in places like it had melted some. Before I pull off the tensioner and the belt, can someone concur with this novice's assessment?

Funny that the smoke was coming from the left side of the engine (AC side) when the alternator tensioner is on the right. Maybe blown that direction from the engine rotation?

Take belt off and feel the parts individually. You can feel rough and sticky bearings. Post a pic of what you find. You may be able to sidestep Ferrari and fix it quicker and cheaper with bearing sourced from

Using google translate, I got the gist of what AUSMANPOFER was saying. It was a valid idea.

FYI the loose translation of the above message reads: from what has been said the problem is the tensioner bearing or the alternator. The solution is to remove or cut the belt and rotate both. One of these will not turn.

Good job the Italians use translators, or 99.99% of use will come un stuck when we need parts or are reading the work shop manuals :). Mind you following the WMs and seeing how many inaccuracies are printed, one has to wonder if they even bother with translators :)

Sorry guys. Dragging this out from 4.5 years ago.

It was the bearing for the ac belt that had worn out and locked up causing the belt to smoke when being pulled around it. Somewhat dufficult to get to but a relatively inexpensive fix
