I have seen Testarossa's with spline wheels fitted with Michelin TRX tires & other cars fitted Goodyear tires. Were tires an option to the purchaser?
I believe the TRX were on EU applications, Goodyear Eagle VR50 on US. Just a guess. Surprisingly, I have and '87 with the original tires installed in 2001. I had no idea they were even available then. No dry rot, cracking or any signs of deterioration. 90% tread to boot. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It depends on year. Some came with the TRX metric size tires and then changed over to standard 16" wheels. It is by far preferred to have the 16" wheels as at least there are a couple reasonably priced options for tires. If you have the metric size you are limited to buying from Coker or some such specialty supplier.
All 85's (including US models) had TRX tires. Early 86 US models also had the TRX tires. Sometime in 1986, the US models switched over to the 16" size. In fact at that point I believe all future TR's (worldwide) went to the 16 in" tires.
^^^This is correct from my research. I don't think you could order or request TRX or 16", it was a running change. My '85 US model had the TRXs...the front tires were the TRX GT tires (same ones sold for BMW TRXs) and in excellent shape, but the date code was 1999, so I switched to 16" wheels from a 1987 TR. I keep the TRX wheels/tires in case Testarossas become valuable and originality is more important. Sam, you may be aware tires can deteriorate inside while appearing great outside. I wouldn't drive too aggressively on 12 year old tires. The BFG Sport Comp 2 are pretty much your only street tire option for the 16" wheels, but they are very good and reasonably priced.
The TRX wheels and tires were a logical, but unfortunate, follow-on from the BBi, which came with TRX tires, too.
