I have a 97 355 spider with 15k miles now 100 miles out from major service-belts etc, and am experiencing a hyper acceleration/ revving issue mainly between second and third gears. Additionally, my engine cooling fan and oil gauge are newly malfunctioning as well. Unfortunately my vehicle was shipped from Chicago to Miami and I've had to pursue service at a Coral Gables dealership. I've been told by this service group that it's probably the clutch and that the fan and oil gauge need replacement. They are estimating $5800!!!. Without question it seems these issues are linked with the recent major service. The two dealerships have spoken and feel confident the new issues are unrelated to the major service- which btw had to be done twice over the course of 2 months for continued oil leaking. Faulty gaskets were to blame....
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

If the car actually speeds up when "hyperaccelerating", it's probably a sticky throttle cable, no big deal to fix. If not, your clutch is probably slipping, unrelated to the belt service. Sounds like you need to take it to an independent to resolve these minor issues.

You need to get the reason for the price. The only way I see it could cost $5800 is if the flywheel grease leaked onto the disc, warped the flywheel and pressure plate and you now need a new pressure plate/clutch combo ($1200), the flywheel resurfaced ($200) and rebuilt with new Kluber grease ($1000). The labor to R&R a clutch is 4-6 hours. A new SPAL fan runs around $250 and takes maybe 45 minutes to swap out. Oil gauge I don't know the cost, but would take half an hour to R&R. Adding all that up, I get around $3500. Worst case, you also need a new throwout bearing - doesn't jive with your symptoms - but that'd be another $800. So $4500 if everything is screwed, which I highly doubt. I would ask for a part and labor breakdown of what they're charging, because it doesn't add up to me.

There are quite a few shops in the Miami area, the only one I've been to was Ansa as they had done some work on my 355 for the PO and looked at my car when I was purchasing it. They were good guys and had some serious machinery in their shop (333sp, 458 gt3 etc.) and based on the invoices of work they had done to my car, they did not overcharge or do unnecessary work.

If it merely needs a new clutch disc per Bruce above (likely), it's $300 for a disc and the same 4-6 hours to R&R it.

Sounds electrical to me. I don't see how the gauges all the sudden go bad together.

And that a mount if money to do a clutch is criminal!

My only comment would be on the major service. Having to do it more then once due to faulty gaskets has happened before but the client should not have to pay for it to be corrected unless the client provided the gaskets. I know of at least one shop that will actually run the engine out of the car as part of the service to detect any faulty parts before buttoning it back up since that process is very labour intensive. My recommendation is if at all possible use a shop that takes that much care when they are performing a major service on your car. I know that is what I will be doing when I get around to doing the major service on my 355.
