Just came back from driving the gold Bora. It actually drives better than I had expected for a car that has been sitting in a showroom for so long. Of course there are a few things that need to be sorted out but have not run into anything major yet.

I am getting my personal Ghibli spyder back from the painter in a couple of weeks and I've blocked off the month of February to get that car together and ready for Amelia Island in early March. All other cars will have to wait until that one is done.

Hi Ivan, perhaps I missed it but what colour did you decide to paint the spyder in the end? The original beige or something else a la Portenos?

    Very best regards.

I remember the owner very well and have a great story that I will post later.

For now it is off to Polo where we share a box with some friends. The ladies wear hats, we talk, sip wine, talk some more, drink some more, have lunch, the horses go back and forth and who won. I don't know?
    Then its time to go.

    Mark,

I went a'la'Portenos and had the Ghibli spyder painted black. So ... it will be black with black hides, black soft top and grey carpeting. The hard top was fitted and luggage set is being made to match the originals. I am flying on Tuesday to where it is being painted and will see the Ghibli in black for the first time.

We shot a sample panel with the original beige color and we just could not envision the car looking good in that color.

As you can see from the plaque, his name is Gary Siemion.
Gary was from Seattle at the time. This Bora was 100% original and spectacular with very little milage. Gary had won the best of show trophy at our club councours held at Quail Lodge. In addition to the beautiful perpetual Trophy he Gary received a 3 foot tall bottle of Champaign. I remember Gary going around and topping up wine glasses and of course making sure his was full all the time. Lets just say he had a lot to drink, I mean a lot.

I might add that the following year a ( and here I would like to insert the most vile and discussing swear words) French owner of a Ghibli Spyder won the trophy and never gave the trophy back so we could pass it on to the next guy. Very discussing and I hope he burns in Hell.

Well the last time I saw Gary was after the awards dinner. Janet and I were driving back to our Hotel on the Carmel Valley Highway in our Ghibli Spyder with the top up and the heater on and out of nowhere came Gary driving Bora #1044 shooting by us doing well over a 135MPH swerving from one lane to another. Janet and I looked at each other and shook our heads in disbelief. We thought he was going to total the Bora for sure.

If it is anywhere near the condition it was in at the time I can say that you have a very nice car there Ivan.

Nice choice Ivan. Guikas in France sold 115S/1079 a while ago in the same black/black.
    It looks befittingly elegant.
I look forward to seeing pictures.

I am very grateful Gary and the car did not meet a tree that evening! The Bora is still in excellent condition so it appears the owners after Gary were a bit more careful.

Was this car from Motorcargallery in FL? How was your experience with them?

Yes, Bora #1044 was at Motorcar Gallery. I saw this car back in August 2010 when I stopped in their showroom while in Ft Lauderdale. Although I have never been fond of gold cars somehow this Bora left a very positive first impression. My reaction was of a nicely kept original car. Sitting next to it was #1010, also a low mileage car with original paint but now converted to Euro bumpers. I use to own #1010 and knew it well, and felt that #1044 was much better. Last thing I would have expected was that over three years later I would be buying that Bora.

Now that the car is in my garage I can say that my first impression was 100% accurate. The stickers and decals look as though they are 5 years old ... not 36 years. The paint is really nice. What really puzzles me is why it was not sold during the almost four years Motorcar owned the car.

I have known Ed Waterman for many years and this is not the first car I've bought from him. As is the case with most dealers do not expect the car to be 100% sorted out, but you nor I mind some dirt under our fingernails.

    Interesting Ivan,

I wondered why it was there for so long as well. I thought it may have been the color or the price fluctuations.

I really like the color and the car, congrats again!

    Hello Bora types:
I am having my Bora repainted in it's original colour finally (Oro Kelso Metalizzatto) having owned it 33 years !
I am trying to source the carpet in the rear engine bay - on the removable engine 'lid' and the two fixed side panels - which were redone by the first owner in black nylon prior to my ownership. I believe it is a kind of medium gray low level loop squarish weave type - anyone know the correct description/type and a current source for it. All replies welcome. This type of carpet does exist in the front trunk and I could send a picture of that.
Also require enough carpet to redo the drivers footwell (a slightly darker gray and a longer type of cut weave - a dreaded LHM leak ruined the carpet backing (which is a kind of vinyl which I couldn't resuscitate).
    Regards,
    Colin

Yeah Colin me too but I've never seen it offered. Mine is a 77 and the carpet in the front trunk and rear hatch areas is identical. the interior carpeting is a long loop type with that rubber backing that melts under a LHM leak, been there too.

The stuff in my trunk & hatch area is a multi-shade black with grey in it.

Maybe it's time someone starts reproducing it?

    Hello Kerry?

    Hi Colin,

I also need some of this carpet. I contacted Fabio Collina who gave me the name of HVL Exclusive Italian Interiors in the Netherlands ... I just sent them an e-mail. I also sent an e-mail to Matt Jones at Re-Originals. Perhaps you have some contacts in the UK you can investigate.

This unique grey carpet was used on most Boras and Meraks.

Wouldn't it be prettier to see the engine and leave the center piece nicely tucked away in a closet at home?

Not so great for the airflow inside the engine compartment though that pretty much sucks anyway. But you'll also get more road dirt inside the hatch area. If you ever lose a cv boot without that cover in place you'll really regret it. It makes quite a mess.

I think the cooling is actually better without the cover I agree you do get more dirt but I do not like to cover a great looking engine . My Bora has never overheated without the cover and I have driven it thru Redding Ca at 115F And after driving it for 7 hours to get there. So if you like your cover you can keep your cover but if you like your engine let it show.
