    Went for a quick spin and I get one of the alternators lights glowing on the dash. Nice! Ok, easy fix. Then I noticed it is the lower alternator light glowing.
    It had to be the lower one right? Why couldn't it be the upper one which is easy to get to and can be changed out in less time than it takes to finish a martini?
    <sigh>

    I feel for you brother! When my alternator light came on, it also was the lower one! :(

    The good news is that the car will function on one alternator if you are judicious in using lights and air conditioning. You will be able to drive it to the shop no problem. I suppose you can do it yourself but getting that thing out and then back in is a bear and one where I didn't mind paying the shop labor for it.

    As long as they both have to come out, may as well have the top one rebuilt too.

    Yeah, it looks like the tie rod needs to be unhooked to drop that bugger.
    I'm figuring that most of our upper units were rebuilt at one time & it's only a matter of time when the lower one needs attention.

    Dave,

    The reason the lower one takes so long is because you were drinking a martini while removing the upper one :D.

    Alternator 'failure' is usually corrected by just changing the brush module on the back side. Parts available for $20-25.

    Yeah, the belts are the real issue to put them on in correct order and don't adjust the lower alternator belt until all belts are in place....my experience.

    I put a new clutch in my car by myself, big project but doable, however after looking at this project I think that bad boy is going to get changed out by someone other than me.

    Sometimes it's worth paying to have it done.

    Complete belt change took me 9 hours over two weekends the first time (getting correct belts); I think I can do it in under 4 now. The lower alternator is just part of that job.

    I'm in the middle of the drive shaft tube bearing job and two weeks ago I was ready to load it on a flat bed, but now feeling better as its starting to go back together.
