Have we destroyed the 355?

You have 30 thousand miles on your original engine mounts? I find this very hard to believe. I think you should have a look at those much more closely. Grab a jack and a piece of wood and lift the engine slightly. Shine a light at the rubber insulators, I'll bet you will find them broken.

 

Just had the transmission out myself and fast cars reinstalled it. I asked them to double check since the seemed ok to me. They said they were worn but ok for now. I also looked at them when I did the engine out 2 years and at 23000 and they were good.

With that statement maybe other owners can clue me in did you need engine mounts every 20000 or what?

 

My were worn out when I bought it at 42k miles, no other record of them being changed. I replaced them with challenge mounts, but apparently 360 mounts also work and are a more robust design, so if/when they go again I'll use those. They were maybe $250 for the pair and took half an hour or so to change, so it's not a big deal.

 

Yup, very easy and cheap repair. But it's one that should be done. The engine sinks a fair amount. This can put some strain on the exhaust. If you car still has the factory cats, have a look too see how close they are sitting to the tops of the trans mounts. I have seen engine mounts so bad, that mounting bolt made a hole in the converter!!

I had a 360 in just this summer, the trans mount bushing, and engine mounts were so badly worn that the clamps that fasten the cat to the muffler, broke through the under paneling of the rear bumper!!

I have to replace mine now front one's only at 81000km I think there still the org.
Even if there not and where new when I bought the car 2.5yrs ago with 27000 km I still got 54000km on these one's. Why I think there the org one's is because just before I bought the car it had a major service and nothing on the invoice about mounts.

 

Thanks that makes me feel better. When I check them it was kinda quick and dirty but nothing. They were definitely not broken and fast cars did I think check because I asked them when reinstalling the GB.

 

When my mounts went bad the throttle got progressively more sticky, new ones fixed it.

 

Thanks cuneo my throttle still seems ok. What's the concensus on best mounts for the $?

 

What part of Canada do you live in? I am super envious of the amount of driving you have done with your 355 in 2.5 years, 54,000km in 2.5 years, Wow!

we can drive are cars all year around ,this year we only had two days with 5cm of snow.not all of Canada is an ice box.last weekend I put on 300km .I would take it out today but its raining.

 

One thing that doesn't get discussed here in the 355 section, or so it seems from my memory, is that 360s and 430s have also experience cracked headers and sticky switches. The 355 seems to be notorious for these problems but it's not unique to the 355. perhaps not as common on the newer cars. Perhaps the cars aren't old enough yet for the sticky problems to occur in mass.

 

I was just trying to be funny have a bunch of relatives in Port Moody, coquitlum, surry and off acadia road. They said weather has been not bad this winter.

Luke. That link needs to be posted anytime there is a debate about 355 header issues. I had no idea that they were as prevalent in 430s as they are. From those comments alone I would say they are more prevalent. Thanks for posting that.

 

Yea, it's because people are too F'in busy bashing the 355 to realize that for all it's so called problems the only one really unique to the 355 is the valve issue, which, as noted in the other link I posted, isn't as bad as it is made out to be. Give the 355 forum kudos for that thread. But the valve guide issue remains blown way out of proportion, not unlike Audi unintended acceleration. A couple of people missed the brake pedal and Audi sales plummeted.

Bingo! I recall at least 2 360s at my local shop which were in for engine rebuilds. New liners, top end, everything. Why? Precat failure. Makes the valve guide issues on the 355 look like a walk in the park.

That's great. And you know whats even better? If your car, or any other car needs guides, it really not all THAT expensive to do at the time of a major. What's a few K$ on a 20 year old exotic?

I commend you guys for talking up the 355, but the 355 issue is different from the 430 issue. 355's can melt their headers like these 355 tubes. The 430 is cracking headers at welds not burning them up. Some blame weld quality some blame loads and poorly designed exhaust hangers cracking welds. Here is the Ferrari TSB so some don't think I'm making this stuff up. Talking up the 355 is great but comparing apples to apples is needed. YMMV
