Apparently, this will be the next two door "S-class"... or as Mercedes-Benz likes to call it... the "CL". [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asbr02fhx0Y]Concept S-Class Coupe Premiere -- Mercedes-Benz - YouTube[/ame] Sorry if a repost.
the side and front quarter views are disconcerting. I like the front-on view best. the interior looks cold and uninviting. It's German. LOL this is a car for someone who has to impress people that they have the latest techno gizmos in something that resembles a car. MB has made some truly beautiful and iconic cars. I am a skeptic. Time will tell if this one makes the grade. Best. And thanks for posting.
Coupes are typically not chauffeur driven. This has gone the way of BMW. Some half-decent surfaces and fluted lines, but overall i agree with Phil. Terrible front end. Interior is hideous--tries too hard to be Rolls Royce, and fails. It looks exclusive, but not exquisite. Definitely not appealing to me, or to my friend who buys a new one every two years. He says he will switch to Maserati now.
looks like a ton of **** to break..... not impressed with MB depreciation but the CL cars seems to get an extra special pounding...
It's a Concept. Real thing will be similar but different to make it more palatable to most people. I don't think it's a car bought to impress anyone(exotic cars and Rollses are for that),it's an S Class for personal use, ultimate daily driver with close to 600 Hp and tremendous torque that can be applied anytime because of standard AWD (65/35 distribution like in current E63 for rear wheel drive bias). Interior of Concept is just that, a Concept, real thing will be closely following the current S Class which looks and feels fabulous for most people who have tried it.
Love it. It'll sell well. If that is also the platform for the planned 4 seat S Class convertible,... that'll be a hit as well.
As much as I love BMWs, I've always had a soft spot for the S-coupe/CLs going back to the 90s. Can't get enough big body coupes imo with those lines.
When I saw the still title of the video in the first post, I thought, "Oh, a new BMW." Then I read the caption... what? MB???? So MB is copying BMW proportions? Clumsy design... heavy handed and gimicky... hope the real thing is much, much better.
agree, my wife just bought the new S class and the interior is just beautiful. This new CL will follow similar design to that I'm sure. It will be my next DD after my E63S Wagon in a couple years.
Beautiful car overall, although I agree the front end styling is a little Dodge Ram-ish. Much better than the BMW 6 series, IMHO.
I really like it from some angles, but MY GOD that nose on the side profile view is heinous. Quite the proboscis it has there. So many new cars are looking like this, with a very high, squared off nose. It looks terrible in all of them. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, that photo captures it -- the new SLK has same nose, and it doesn't work there either. I have a feeling it's dues to European pedestrian safety regs. I.e., if a car runs into you and you hit the bonnet, it should be a comfortable and safe experience.
My understanding is that the regs do not just require a certain height or shape, but have something to do with the hood being a certain height above hard points underneath like the radiator or engine block. So, in a mid or rear-engine car there is much more flexibility in packaging the radiator and obviously no engine up front, so they are able to use a lower nose than a front engine car. Even a front-mid engine design can look better (California, Corvette) as opposed to a car with the engine way towards the front like an Audi.
