I have a white 400i which I like a lot- But damn if a 412 in White isn't gorgeous! I don't think I can add a third one to the collection but this looks like the kind of 412 that SHOULD demand top dollar- clean and obviously cared for-

    1987 FERRARI 412 COUPE

Don't know the price. Wonder what it will eventually sell for?

Looks pretty nice, last offered for sale in March, 2010 from Nevada by seller who said he inherited it from his father, who he said was second owner. Offered at $38,750 then with 28,000 miles. Previously offered by a private seller in March, 2009 also in Las Vegas (possibly same as in 2010) and then in April, 2003 by Fantasy Junction with 21,000 miles.

Sounds as though the same seller, the son, has consigned it to The Auto Collection. Anyone who is interested care to report the current mileage and the asking price?

Don't think 412 autos- Even really nice ones (I Own one) are $50K cars yet.

I think this car bought in the mid to high $30s is about right.

Nice car, but would be nicer still if the rear valance, chin and sills hadn't been painted white. Makes the car look more slabby.

Valances and sills are black on all 412s; believe this car has been repainted. Also the ad by Auto Collections of Las Vegas states the car was sold new by Ferrari of Houston. As I believe all on this thread would know, the 412 was not homologated for sale as a new car in the United States. So all 412s here are gray market cars 'federalized' for DOT/EPA compliance. I'm not comfortable with this offering.

I am talking to them about this car so I really appreciate the info; and I am aware of the import issue...so why would they state sold as "new"; could it come here untitled?

The respray would likely be able to be picked up by my paint and body guy; he is excellent. I am ok with a repaint IF it is in the original color.........we already know as you pointed out the bumper color is wrong..........thnx! Doc

+1 -- with virtually no exterior contrast, my first thought was "naked (not in a good way) and over-fat". The black mirrors on that silver example look appropriate and enhance the sleekness of the sheetmetal creases (as does the lower parts being black) by not competing for attention; those white mirrors don't, and are just a styling distraction/misfit shape. (Not easy to "improve" something that made it past both the PF and F decision-makers...)

    Doc,
You'll hear this from time to time. I'd really push them on "show me the window sticker/dealer invoice slip", explain to them the understanding we all have about the grey market situation of this model & can they prove otherwise…
Otherwise, this contact should be able to verify it's original destination:

    Tony Willis
    The Maranello Concessionaires Archive

    0044 [0]7785 552069 M
    [email protected]

Also, the importing owner was required to acquire EPA/DOT paperwork to legalize/register the car…which includes the following:

    1.) Customs Form 7501 - Consumption Entry
2.) HS Form 7 - Importation of Motor Vehicles/Subject to Fed. Safety Standards
3.) EPA Form 3520 - Importation of Motor Vehicles/Subject to Fed. Air Poll. Control Regs.

Subsequent to completion of these/submission to the DOT, a bond release letter is sent from the DOT NHTSA to U.S. Customs Service.
Customs will issue a conformance letter upon completion & satisfaction of emissions testing, & the car is released to the importing owner.
The original title accompanied the car at importation & upon completing the requirements of the EPA & DOT, a new title was issued to the owner by the State of where you register.

If someone notices that I left something out, please step in :D

Not quite sure what you mean by wrong bumper color…all variants prior to the 412 had black elastomeric bumpers, the 412 updated to the color-keyed fiberglass units.

    EDIT:
A 2 page "Notice Descriptive Des Vehicules Ferrari F 101 CL" from CH. Pozzi S.A. ('the' Ferrari dealer of France who was the 'origin of destination' for the car from Ferrari S.p.A.) was included with the original title of my car.

I recall someone posted that the bumpers should be black, hence my comment. As far as the other import/original seller issue etc does it matter SINCE the car has been driven and registered here in the USA; I mean are you thinking this is NOT an original 412 but some type of replica. If that is not possible then I would think since it has been registered in a couple states it should be legal to drive anywhere, sans the smog issue etc. hence, maybe I am dumb but I am missing the concern other than the obvious that maybe they are MISREPRESENTING the car and that is another story and that I get!lol thnx, Doc

It is possible that some gray market cars were imported essentially as "new" in the sense that a broker or even a private individual could purchase the car in Italy, import it and have it Federalized in the U.S. and then sell it to its first retail owner.

The fact that the car has been registered and titled in the U.S. already should make any new registration a bit easier. Sometimes an insurance company will kick out the VIN as their records will show "not officially imported to U.S." but this can be overridden easily through your insurance agent. California has its own rules and getting it certified for emissions in most areas of CA can be very difficult.

Note that the former requirement to have full records from EPA and DOT releases in order to import/register the car has lapsed since the car is now more than 25 years old. Still nice to have IMO.

No, it's definitely the real deal.

Like John said, it's 25 yrs. old, it shouldn't be an issue. Over the years, I've had mine insured by Hagerty & presently USAA...neither nor the Dept. of Motor Vehicles have asked for EPA/DOT paperwork. However, CA would be a totally different story.
I made the comment "show me the dealer invoice" to see if the seller could produce such a document. The EPA/DOT paperwork kind of completes the import story of the car (when, what port of call, declared value, etc.).
No need to run from this car, they did mention extensive service records so it's quite possible the import paperwork might accompany it. & white is a good color to have in Hotlanta. Interesting, though, that the mileage figures weren't mentioned.
