Ron himself was not involved in nor aware of the Stepney espionage scandal (but Alonso was). However, the buck stopped with Ron, so he did the honourable thing and took responsibility. It wasn't Mercedes forced him out, it was Mosley - the deal for the FIA not banning McLaren for 2008/2009 was that Ron had to step down. It was a personal vendetta of Mosley against Dennis. If it were purely about the cheating scandal, then Renault should have been fined $120MM in 2008, but they got off scot free.

Thanks G you saved me posting it.

Mosley should be in that German court not Bernie.

I will agree 1/2 way- MB was definately behind him have to step aside... I dont think he knew exactly what was going on -but as a racers racer - he'll use what he can to win - they all do.

Mosley & Dennis - agree it was a feud... the class warfare in England at its best...

Private upper class Mosley vs. Boy from the streets made good Dennis... I think that is actually what drives Dennis so hard - to prove that he IS better than anyone else.

...or one dead and the other in jail.

Brawn left Mercedes because with Wolff and Lauda he had not enough control. Why it would be different with Ron Dennis?

I just can't see that working at all well..... Ron's a control freak, and I don't think Ross wants to be anything other than 'the man' these days.

    Cheers,

The whole Spygate event happened two years earlier in 2007 with a verdict issued in September. If Mercedes had felt the need to insist Ron get out over that, it would have happened much sooner.

Now you might be able to suggest that this was the reason for Mercedes divesting their interest in McLaren as that process began in 2008 and full payment was completed by 2012. By the point Ron stepped down from his role in early 2009 Mercedes no longer had reason to or the authority to insist on this as they were already well in the process of giving back the 40% of McLaren they once owned.

If those rumors prove true it would be an obvious explanation for the change at the top. A team at McLaren's level not being ready for the first test sounds like a final nail in a coffin to me.

Hey, missing the first test is no big deal. Failing the crash test, no big deal.

    Just ask Lotus.

2015 Mclaren should be feared, they will be strong. Alonso going back anyone? We'll see how 2014 Fezza goes

If Ron is in control I really don't see any chance of Alonso finding a seat again at McLaren.

Whitmarsh wanted him and I believe that would have flied in the face of Ron, and could be another issue that finally tipped the wagon.

I agree. He has a knack of finding really good young talent. I don't see what Alonso brings to the party.

    Really?

Alonso brings his share of baggage for sure but he's fast, smart and determined on track.

Red bull also missed the first test in 2010, IIRC, and they won everything.

(Of course I doubt that McLaren has any chances this season)

    Yeah, entirely comparable.

Macca isn't RB and hasn't been for a long time.
    Even longer in lotus' case.

    I like a good debate:

Ron & spygate - him having to step down was a negotiated settelment with MB and other investors. Ron is not the kind of guy who is just going to sell up and MB is not one to be taken un aware. 2007 - 2009... not un heard of for McLaren and MB to come to terms and arrainge Ron's next venture in business - road car development .... if you ask me Ron has come out the winner big time. MB money & resource backed the funding of the road car plant, and now they are out - Honda in and Ron back in charge day to day... not too bad.

Do you have a citation on his move being imposed?
