Well I own a few ferraris and I'm building a 250 gto kit car. Just because I love the looks. Of course I'm not badging it. In fact I'm trying sell all the badging and lights that came with it. Probably a $2000 worth of tail lights, markers and badges. If anyone's looking)))

Ill throw this into the ring Lambobuilder.com. Straight up clone from molds to Laser scans off an original chassis. Drop in a SL1 with G50 Tranny...? Fun weekend canyon cruiser. I think they got shut down also by Audi.

In the end I appreciate the art and effort behind some replicas. But then again I love XR4TI's and MB 190's.

I think the next fun car will be a 2014 Stingray.

So the question is: If you can have a replica that runs and drives virtually the same as the original, is more reliable and less expensive, then other than the name, what is the point in having the original?

To own a Ferrari of course. A replica is not a Ferrari.

An original is actually a product from the company, built by the company, and given its serial number. It's the truly great vehicle and the one people want to imitate so badly. It seems a silly question, but without there ever being an original there would never be anyone making replica ones. As for why someone would want an original over a replica, I think the main reason would be that they value authenticity and actually want to own a Ferrari.

For the same reason I like my old Rolex, so called, "Superlative Chronometer". It doesn't keep time very well and certainly not as accurately as a $15 WalMart plastic wristwatch.

It can't store phone numbers either. But I like it anyway in spite of the fact that some people can't understand why.

    I agree, too.

The original is the original and there is a magic in it. I think its nondescript and amounts to many feelings all at once but I know what you mean.

This makes me think, somewhat off-subject but related, about the notion of "patina." I think this ties into that. For example, I envision your old Rolex with a worn-in appearance--still nice but used. And there is something about an original elite object that has been worn in and kept to look that way. Some collectors of Ferraris, for example, like the old patina of some well-preserverd original pieces. I mention this because of the counterpoint to that--which is to "over restore" a car. I've seen some Ferraris somewhat ruined because they were over-restored. There is something about a flawed but original thing still in use that is magical. It has to do with the art of living. Do you see what I'm saying?

Of course. Even when restoring a car, the use of a reproduction or new part can cause a car to loose some of its "soul". Many new parts just can't replace the original. I've seen many bright shiny new parts fail in comparison to the original. Sometimes it's that a radius is slightly different or a contour just not quite right or even the wrong gage of material but it costs the car some character. There are original cars that just have an strange undeniable presents about them that's hard to explain.

Yes. That's a good way of putting into words a difficult thing to put into words.

An all original vintage or semi-vintage car has an aura. Someone else said it was about the soul. I think a machine can actually have soul as it was created by human engineering and handiwork. I don't think all machines have soul, but some of them do.

Soul is a good verb, personality is another. Fortunately you can change out the negative personality traits hahah.

The question was posed if that you can buy a better quality, better performance replica for less would you? The 'continuation' Cobras, GT40's and Porsche 962's sell just fine.

As stated previously, I wouldnt have a problem driving a high quality continuation car......and drive the wheels off of it! A Rothmans 962/956 comes to mind.

i do not own a replica.

But a lot of you need to sit back and understand that there are many people in the world who can not raise the cost of even a cheap Ferrari, but what they can do is spend a bit every month ... so they can afford to build a replica but cannot save the free cash to purchase a Ferrari.

I can pay back just about any amount, but with mortgage and kids there is no way I could build a bank balance of even $20k. And going to the bank for a loan for a Ferrari would have the bank manager thinking i had lost it.

So before you are so financially wise and patronizing to others, remember that not all of us have free cash lying around or have the ability to save that amount ... as soon as we would get serious money saved up family pressures would direct it to something sensible.

Now if somebody wants to sell me a 308GT4 and is happy to receive $1000 a month, I'm in ;)

This is not about money. I can´t afford a Ferrari either but there are many other great inexpensive cars that look and drive better than a replica.

I understand that many folks are just interested in the looks, but the only replicas that really look like the original are not cheap at all.

Is it a replica or a "continuation"? I'm not sure EITHER word fits. In this case however, I would be quite pleased to see it in MY garage.

Then why do these people think that just because they don't have enough money for a Ferrari, it gives them the right to bastardize a Fiero into a rolling fiberglass sausage adorned with Ferrari emblems? Some people will reach their goal of owning a Ferrari, some won't, and there are some who will just try to fake it.

V-Twelve you are correct, it was late. I guess the point I was trying to make was that our Fcars have a lot of personality, souls whatever we want to call them. Part of that is finicky parts that tend to break. Fortunately, there are aftermarket solutions to correct these shortcomings. I venture to say that upgrading finicky components changes the personality for the better.
