I managed to put 45,000 kms on mine in 3 years! My friend has 112,000 kms on his in total! Both our cars still look amazing.

Isn't that the truth. The high mileage cars that I see usually have so much OCD care and maintenance lavished upon them that their condition almost always belies the miles. I can say without hesitation that I would take my 26k car over the $7k RM car I saw this week, despite how the market sees it. Although I don't really care how the market thinks on F40s.

I have noticed too, that some high-mileage F40s look a lot fresher than their mileage would suggest.

Having said that, this is by no means a generalization.

I see a few F40s. Actually, specializing in the cars full-time affords me the opportunity to see a LOT of F40s. Placed | Joe Sackey Classics

Most of the F40s that come across my desk in the form of images don't even make it to the point of discussion. My professional conclusion would be that you have to take the cars dispassionately and without bias on a car-by-car basis, and you cannot generalize or assume anything.

Given that all the cars are over 20 years, some very low-mileage cars look rough and require lots of deferred maintenance which they have not been afforded. On the other hand, some low-mileage cars are literally brand-new cars that have had the OCD care & maintenance lavished upon them as you describe above. Same as above is true of high-mileage cars, some are finely-tuned machines, others are restoration projects. Its a 50-50 thing with no rhyme or reason.

One thing worth noting for the uninitiated, speak to someone with a high-mileage car and they will advocate a high mileage car, speak to someone with a low-mileage car and they will advocate a low-mileage car, and this is an understandable part of human nature, which takes you right back to assessing the cars on a car-by-car basis.

The other thing worth noting is, given that a car is an accumulation of moving parts subject to wear & tear, the notion that a low-mileage car is closer to a new car is a fair-enough one based on logical thinking. After all, there must be a reason why the market consistently affords them significantly more value.

Well, I also think that it goes back to what I have been saying for years: there are two distinct and separate F40 markets. One is for low mileage cars that are treated as decorations or statues (or maybe like Academy Awards) and the other is for cars that are regularly driven and maintained. I am not going to say that one group loves their F40s more or deserves their F40s more or anything like that. The point is that there are two distinct groups of buyers two distinct groupings of cars and I don't even think that those two groups of cars even follow the same pricing trends. It's almost like two separate models entirely. But one thing that I know is that the buyers for cars to drive don't want the low mileage cars and the ones who want investments or statues don't want cars with miles. But each is happy with what they want and buy.

Ricky, thank you for spelling out in simple terms why some F40s remain low-mileage!

I know some find it hard to understand why some F40s are not driven, but, the aforementioned post by ttforcefed explains why: Life.

More power to those who can drive their F40s thousands & thousands of miles a year, its to be applauded. But, its not a competition as already mentioned, and for that matter, I know of F40s with even more miles than the numbers posted above.

Having said all that, perhaps the F40 is SO special that its ok to treat it like a fine wine, to be savored and enjoyed on special occasions. There is nothing wrong with that, especially when you have 10, 20 or even 40 other cars. Possession of one that is cared for is all that matters, and I have a feeling those that can't drive them as much as some of their peers are just as grateful and enjoy them just as much.

Later on the F40 will be treated like all the current 60s-70s cars where mileage wouldn't really matter.

Recently in Europe a 1990 F40 won concours with 95,000 kms on the clock. The car was immac and I personally know the owner. It just comes down to how well
Maintained the car is. In my opinion mileage shouldn't really matter too much so long as the condition and all supporting service documents, stamps and books are there to match. If anything, the higher mileage cars have a history that well worth paying for.

Though guessing not many '60's-'70's cars (except '76 Eldo 'verts and '78 Pace Car 'Vettes?) were mothballed at birth as future collectibles ...

Wouldn't be surprised if a delivery-mile 330 GTS, if unearthed, would bring a price ahead of the others 330 GTS (even the patina'd clunker!).

I guess that would depend on just how "deep" the patina has traveled lol! Circa 1988-1990 I found a local 330 GTS 2+2 for sale at $10K but could not convince my investor/friend to go 50-50 with me. Now I see 330's selling for $250K-$700K plus. He always sadly mention's that he should have listened to me.

The one that got away still haunts us both.

No. I am literally asking you what did you find. You say you found a "330 GTS 2+2" that sells between "$250k and $700k."

First, in all of my time learning about and collecting cars, I've never heard of a 330 GTS 2+2. Not to say that there could not be a long lost barn find of a model that I don't know about. So then what model sells between $250k and $700k? 330 GT 2+2 cars have to be incredibly restored to get $200k even so it's not that. 330 GTS's go for well over $1m and almost $2m and 330 GTCs go for $500k to $750k. So it's not any of those. So that's why I ask what did you find.

Maybe you found something that's worth far more that none of us who are never lucky enough to stumble onto these rare finds could only dream of.

Although before you beat yourself up about it, I know that if I needed a partner to go halves with me on some $10k rubbish heap of a Ferrari, I probably would not have held it all the way to now. I would have probably flipped it as soon as I could get $15k for it. And since 1989-1990 was THE Ferrari boom, it would have had to be pretty bad for a real Ferrari 12 cylinder car to only be worth $10k. In those days, prices were even higher than they are now.

It was a 330 2+2 in the advert (fact) yet I did not save any documentation allowing me to verify specifics as I would have already posted them, my bad. As well the $10K asking price could have been asked by someone "not in the know" and anything else is mere speculation.

    Really??
If you would take the time and reread that thread you will find that I openly admitted the watch was ID'd as a fake by a high end retailer. I pull no punches and I am as honest as the day is long so for the life of me I do not understand why, you specifically, keep diluting threads with your subliminal hatred towards me? I will buy you a Violin.
