It just occurred to me; I've been collecting many parts from wrecked 308's... I really don't believe any of them come from the same car, so; how many 308's are still running around out there?

From what I remember, production numbers for this particular model was a lot, judging by Ferrari standards... however, comparing those numbers to other auto makers, the total seems insignificant.

Adding to the fact that I recently saw many "decent" 308s being dismantled by several specialized salvage yards, I'd believe that the number of running 308s around the globe might be rather small now.

Does anybody know how to gather the info of dead chassis numbers? Is someone collecting this information?

    Here's a guess.

In the USA there are 176,000,000 cars of which 5,000,000 are totaled each year. A "totaling" rate of .036. Our cars are probably cared for at a higher then average level so lets set the totaling rate at 1/4 the average.

The 308's had a 10 year production run of 12000 cars ending in 1985.

    Now the lazy guy math.
    12000 x .036 x .25 = 108 cars a year tapering down a bit over time

But since this is all really a great big guess we can use that number and figure about 3200 are gone. Leaving 8800 in barns and garages worldwide.

    What John?

No integration over time t=0 to t=25 years, with beginning production ramp at 1200 cars per year over the first 10 years?

By comparison Toyota alone made 8,500,000 cars last year. And 300,000 of them were totaled. Almost twice as many brand new Toyotas were totaled last year as all the cars Ferrari has ever made.

Ferrari is kinda a rounding error when put next to the big companies.

That's an interesting question. I wonder that about my Pantera as well. I was trying to see
if there might be a correlation between average number of 308s or Panteras on ebay at any given time versus remaining fleet. Collector cars probably have a much different attrition rate versus regular cars. One of the insurance companies might have a feeling. I was also watching Guzzi Ambassadors and Eldorados being parted out at about one to two a week. At first a bit distressing but it keeps us in parts I guess.

I suspect 20% are gone as well, but it maybe more of the older ones than the newer ones...example, I think more glass, and euro carb cars are gone over the gtsi and qv....reason I say this is, the cars were much more expensive as production continues, and the 50s,60s, and early 70s cars were more raced.
Again, just a guess, but I think we are close.
