Anyone seen it? Great WWI airplanes... even Gotha bombers up close and personal. Barrage baloons... Made in the '20's. It was cleaned up and re-released a couple years ago. It's on DVD Clara Bow... even Gary Cooper, briefly.
My Parents gave it to me for Christmas but we haven't watched it yet. Hard to get the family excited about a silent move, although I hear it's great. Dave
I purchased this last year, and I think it is the best movie of this period every produced. If you watch the credits, and other clips on the dvd about the making of the movie, you will be amazed. For instance I seem to recall that the lead actors learned to fly to make the movie. The US Army was used to make the war scenes, and today it would just be impossible to do what they did. Just amazing, totally amazing. i though I would hate a silent movie. Not so, this movie was just tremendous and a must see for anyone interested in aviation. "The only movie to ever win an Academy Award for Best Production. In the Oscars' first year of existence, two "Best Picture"-type awards were given: This film was awarded Best Production and Sunrise (1927) was awarded Best Artistic Quality of Production. Both awards were discontinued the following year and replaced by the modern Best Picture Oscar; Best Production is usually thought of as that award's equivalent."
Yup, have a copy. Another amazing thing was the whole movie was shot as a silent film, and then reshot as a talkie. In some places the silent scenes were reused, with appropriate sound track added.
I think that you have this movie confused with "Hell's Angels", which fits that description. To my knowledge, "Wings" was never issued as a "talkie".
"Wings" is not a talkie... at least the new release is not... No verbage at all, though. The 'lines' are in panels every half minute or so. There is a soundtrack with the new release... music, explosions, guns, and the sound of radial engines everytime a plane (or shadow of a plane) goes over. Some great airborne shots. Also, the Army used footage of ground movements with old WWI tanks. Spoiler: Gary Cooper dies "doing figure 8's" and eating chocolate very early in the movie.
