I was picking my car up from Valet at a Suns game the other day and got semi accosted by a guy waiting for his car. I have a temp tag that notes the car is a 2012. As I was getting into my car a guy (mid 30's i'd say) says, "Nice car. Too bad you couldn't AFFORD a new one!" I glanced back at him (mouth open), shook my head in amazement, then got in my car. Just as I was closing the door, he walked up to me and said "Broke mutha(sex act).!" I kept my cool and just drove off.

The strength of reaction people can have to these (just) cars is alarming.

The guy said, "Broke mutha(sex act)" as he was head to his '95 Honda Accord at the darkest far end of the parking deck.

Even leased these cars cost more than what most people pay in rent or mortgage. Some people just talk out of the side of their neck just to try and ruin your day. I'm glad you ignored him, for he was definitely projecting his own life failures and inadequacies.

    Jealousy is very powerful.

It is dangerous to drive these cars to places where you can encounter people who can get very jealous.

ummm, I find it hard to believe that the idiot was not attempting some poor form of humor.

not even Snobby McsSnob-nob is going to seriously try to put someone down by pointing out a 2 year old Ferrari... or put the hurt on you by actually saying you are therefore broke.

Poor attempt at humor. Nothing more.

"Class Warfare" is not a catch phrase but reality of life. With rare exception, most here, "earned" and "sacrificed". However, too many no longer value a work ethic. Those individuals must break their mirrors and find others to blame. Clearly, our Ferrari's represent "conspicuous consumption", and could have only be "ill gotten gains", at their expense. Sorry to hear, but it will get worse. Best

One of the reasons I sold my Ferrari....way too much attention and not all of it good. Became a burden to drive the car due to the added hassle factor.

That was in Nevada and occasionally SoCal...

Now that we live in Texas I wonder if the experience would be any different.

What do you expect taking your 458 (red?) to a sporting event? you want to blend in with other people in these events, not stick like a sore thumb. Obviously, he thought you were trying to make a statement and he told you his feelings. I wouldn't worry about it and would not give up my 458 (lol that's laughable)to prevent comments from the haters, just don't take it where the morons are.

Btw I have my 458 for the joy of driving it, never park it anywhere, and will never take it to a sporting event. And, it is a '14 not a puny '12 :)

Just the other day I drove my 360 to Home Depot. When I left the store and was walking to my car, this guy on a bicycle (he looked like he could barely afford a bicycle) is standing right next to my car, waiting for me to approach. He says, "Is this your car?", I replied, "Yes", then he says, "Well - it's no Enzo but I guess it'll get you from point 'A' to point 'B', right?" and rides off.

Yeah man, I drove all the way home with a paper bag over my head because I don't have an Enzo... :D

We have been come a society that values only what we consume rather than taking pride in what we produce. Perhaps I'm part of the problem as a Ferrari owner and an obvious, and some would argue, ostentatious, consumer. But it's tough for one to see the years of sacrifice and struggle I went (go through) to afford such a luxury or how much value I place on that struggle and sacrifice.

Hard work often pays off. Some struggle to see past the pay off.

People who are not in the market for these cars may not realize that a used, late model ,Ferrari may cost more than a new one. They don't understand the economics of the situation. Some people buy used (and pay a premium) simply because they don't want to wait 6 - 12 months.

In any case I think that this comment is more appropriately addressed to those driving previous gen cars (360, 430 etc). Many (though not all) of those really can't afford a new Ferrari

It was parked next to another 458, a Drophead and a bunch of other very expensive cars. Just another day in Valet at a Suns game.

I enjoy driving the car and I value my enjoyment over blending in...particularly on my personal time. That's like arguing, "she deserved to be assaulted. No one made her wear that low cut top."

Wow 2014. Well that changes everything...

Dr. J, I think as a MD you are not part of the problem. I worked in Manufacturing, and World wide engineering. Those jobs are leaving the USA. We are ranked 37th in the industrial world for science, and engineering garduates.

I think it is a problem of Sucess breeds failure. When I ran engineering for a major company I could not find American engineers. I had to use Chinesse or Indian engineers which are very good but they all went home. Maybe I own too many cars also. :)

sorry to hear that - envy can be a powerful force - some people can't stand to see other people success - next time just call em out exactly the way he tried to calling you out.

Look him straight in the eye and say:
    "Haters gonna hate"
"Hate the game, not the player - hater"
"You don't know me!, Step off hater"

A hater can't deny they hatin....

Those 39 owners of 250 GTO must be REALLY broke, they can only afford a 50 years old car, not a brand new one :)

You know how to really piss off the hater if you want to? Dangerous though.

You tell them I am really a Broke mutha(sex act), this lame beater is all I can afford right now, please don't look at it, it is embarrassing. I can't afford your rich man's car sir :)

That would really make them furious.

Boo hoo. Another first world problem. Always consider the source. I rarely get any negativity when in an exotic, and frankly often feel embarrassed to drive a car that cost more than most people's savings and salary combined. You have to figure some will harbor some frustration that they express as resentment.

You'll get no sympathy from me, since you are incredibly fortunate to have a 458 to draw that attention.

Unreal. I just wish people realized what I have takes nothing away from YOU. What I have doesn't detract from YOU. I tend to derive a lot of vicarious enjoyment from others experience. When I see people doing well and enjoying themselves I want to join in the celebration.
