Most, if not all of the Cop cars have number plate recognition technology on board already.
It's not just the usual registration and drivers license stuff either. It can be used by the Sherriff to identify cars/drivers with unpaid fines. They frequently have blitzes in major shopping centre car parks where they wheel clamp the cars on the spot unless the driver can stump up the outstanding money then and there.

There is a whole lot of other stuff that they could do; but haven't yet. It's going to get a whole lot worse.

I agree………………………. providing it's a legitimate fine that the person has knowingly dodged.
However that isn't always true. I got a parking fine in the mail from my local council who are a pack of money grubbing dishonest arseholes. It mentioned the location and the time; but provided no proof whatsoever. As it happens I knew they were wrong as the time and date just happened to coincide with one of the worst hail storms in years and both my home and work were badly damaged. At the time mentioned I was 30 km's away at my work whilst my wife was at our damaged home with a baby and a 2yr old. In other words it was quite impossible that the car mentioned was where they said it was at that time.

Anyway, long story short I rang them and gave them the story. Snotty ***** on the other end didn't care so I asked for their proof of the alleged infraction. Her answer was "we are not obliged to provide proof or leave a ticket on the vehicle at the time". WTF !!!!!!! GO SHOVE YOUR TICKET WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE says I. How the hell am I supposed to realise I have done the wrong thing if there is no ticket left on the vehicle? How do I get the evidence to contest it if I don't have a clue I have been booked? Snotty ***** says "pay up or fight it in court". As tempting as it was to do just that, my time was worth more than the fine and the inconvenience so I begrudgingly paid up. Now I could have taken the "Go **** yourself route" and ignored the escalating demands. Eventually I would have been caught by big brother and had my car clamped. I am in the right, they are in the wrong; but Big Brother wins.

    Still think it's a great idea ?

I was told by an equally snotty ***** that not having a front numberplate was a "very, very, very serious CRIME!" like wtf!! .... and then the excellent news that it was indeed a $300 fine AND 3 points ... I was one of the very first "lucky" ones

I think it's a great idea if implemented properly, which it sounds like it isn't, in your case. Maybe not applicable to dodgy parking tickets, but on the numberplate readers, they must have a video input - they should store relevant frames as automatic proof!

I'd have done it, and I'd have won.

In fact, I won a VCAT case once that scored a few bucks for 360C

    You criminal you :p

It's only serious because of the potential lost revenue opportunities when they can't get your number from the front. I gave up on not having a front plate years ago, living in the "Police state" it's just not worth the inevitable drama, cost and license points.
I'm fortunate that I have heritage plates for all my cars which are a lot smaller than normal issue plates and take up less room. Even so I have to use very good replications of the plate in sticker form on the Scuderia due to the curvature of the front bar. You can't bend an enamel covered metal heritage plate. Now that's still illegal and I could be booked and lose points for it. I've only been pulled up once for it in 12 years and the Cop accepted the explanation and acknowledged the sticker was larger and more legible than the actual plate itself. He chose to book me for running R rated Hoosiers (brand new) as in his opinion they didn't have the required tread depth :p That was on a 360 Modena that had the same problem with a curved front bar. I've also run sticker plates on an M3 CSL and Granturismo with no issues.
