you've lost the plot dude. things you are posting are simply sad. I feel sorry for the P1 you'll be owning...it deserves an owner who isn't so ignorant, one that appreciates serious engineering from all companies. by 'real world' i mean a universe that doesn't include daily drag racing on a runway, or 'pulls' against veyrons, enzo's, etc. btw, here in America, you do realize that we, as a culture, are obsessed with 0-60 right? in which case the talentless runts at Porsche managed to build something that'll whup your end all be all car all day, everyday. never mind that the car could be driven just about anywhere anytime, any season, while it's not busy cruising around the NS in a time that doesn't need a "of course we did" video to help distract the watching world.

they wanted super sharp throttle response possible with a NA engine while keeping engine weight as low as possible...they provided a super wicked 285lb engine that makes well over 600 ponies, that revs to 10 grand (limited to 9K), and makes wicked noises.

I think you mistakenly included 918 in the turbo group. just like your P4/5CM, the relatively 'low' torque and at high rpm of the 918 (390ft-lb at 6000rpm) is fully and seamlessly augmented by the e-motor. massive 940ft-lb total. I also agree, add two small efficient turbo's with anti-lag tech to the very light weight V8 and ditch all the e-stuff including front e motor. 750-800hp in a 2600lb car. sign me up. heck, even just the NA motor, pushed to 650hp perhaps, in a 2600lb car...performance would still be explosive. that's what they should do with 918 'RS' version, if ever produced.

In that time you clearly never learned to appreciate or respect them, so what's your point? Your attitude is pathetic.

One of the most ridiculous posts I have read on this forum in a while. I am not a Porsche guy but to look at cars like the 918 and the 959 and say the above is just blatantly ignorant. Then again on your time on this forum you thrive on posts like the above so I perhaps should be so surprised.

Oh, am also still waiting for you mention all this racing experience, what were you racing?

i appreciate them for what they are: ass-backwards relics that bounce around the road at silly speeds.

I exceed it on an almost daily basis. What's the problem? Why buy a fast car if you don't want to go fast?

you guys all get so emotional. there is truth to everything i write here. i love cars but for one reason: to drive them. so shoot me. getting lectured about driving fast on a supercar thread, now that has to be a first?
maybe sometimes i exaggerate in the interest of brevity, but all these brands/cars have their shortcomings and just heaping praise on them all the time is banal.

Thank god for your padded room in your fortified bunker. And you must be calling out to your butler to type in your responses--you wouldn't want to die from carpal tunnel, would you. It may have never happened, but why take the chance?

    Gentlemen:

This is going to be a hard post to make. But, I am a standup guy and I believe it is important to be honest in these posts. I have challenged McL's claim of a sub 7 minute lap.

I called a friend of mine--I will not give his name, because I want to protect his anonymity. He was intimately "involved" in Formula One for many years and still remains active in racing circles. His contacts at McLaren are above reproach.

I spoke with him yesterday. I gave him the background on the discussion here asked him if McL had produced a 'Ring time below 7 minutes. I asked him if he could place a call to McL and ask them. Here is his response--and I will try to be as accurate as possible.

Before I give you his statement, he was a little confused why we would all be so worked up about this. He said that the company had made its statement and had moved on to other challenges. I was unable to get him to see that this was a big deal--meaning I was unable to make him see that posting a time was important. He seemed to think that this was a foregone conclusion and there did not need to be much debate.

He said, "Ok, here is the situation . . . if someone from McLaren calls me, I will ask. But I do not want to initiate that call, because it would put them in a very difficult situation. Because of my position, I don't think they could refuse to answer my question. But I know that they would not want to answer it, given the fact that it would expand the number of people who know the time--and increase the likelihood of it getting out. And, if they refuse to answer my question, then that is an answer in itself.

"But I do know this, when I have been around the McLaren facility and executives, they are quite happy about the P1, and its performance. They believe that they have the highest performance production car out there and are very very confident in this.

"I know that things have been very relaxed since they went to the Ring and tested the car. And I know that they have run the P1 at many other circuits, without much publicity. And I know that each time they come from a test, they are happy.

"So, if I actually find out a time, I will call you. But don't expect me to give you anything before the company makes an announcement.

"But remember this . . . Ron Dennis always has an 'end game.' If he is being sly, then he is beling sly for a reason. If he is being confident, he is being confident for a reason. He would never put out a statement about his car that he couldn't back up and he may be playing a game to bait enough people about the car."

So I asked him, do you think they did a sub 7 lap?

He laughed and said, "I don't think there is any doubt that they did."

OK, serve me some crow. I hear it tastes like chicken if you put enough barbecue sauce on it.

Cool. Unfortunately Dennis's approach is still the heart of the matter.

Would love to see the P1 push the envelope in a public, accessible, and concrete manner that backs up Ron's claims. That still remains to be seen.

    But oh well.

Edit: And thanks, 550, for going fishing. Awesome post.

God that blue 918 looks epic. I love Porsches, but have been a little indifferent about the 918 looks until now. Sorry but I am tired of all the silver, and black these days.
