Dick Vitale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So…., I never watch basketball, but a family member was watching Duke and Syracuse tonight. We have an interest in ACC since we are Clemson people. Dick Vital was one of the announcers and hearing him made me wonder, "Who is this man?" Of course I know he is an announcer, and have seen him in commercials for years. But who is he? So I googled and found this youtube clip and watched the entire speech. This has to be one of the best inductee speeches ever. The passion, the humility, the gratitude, and the solid grounding in the most important things in life are made crystal clear. Although it is a long speech, it is worthwhile watching. I like him and his ideals. He is truly a fully developed human being. I wish we all could have some of these same qualities. I think he is a man to emulate and a role model.

You are absolutely right. I know Dick, and have asked him to mentor me.

I knew before I moved to Sarasota three years ago that I wanted to ask him that, because of his passion, and I could sense he had the work ethic. It is his deep passion for others, and with high energy, combined with being humble, that are just so incredibly rare and becoming attributes. ... People respond to him. They love him.

When I moved to Sarasota, I came to realize that he lives here. I did not know before moving here. I just knew that I wanted to work with him.

I think very, very highly of him.

He writes really good books too.

I'm a big Dickie V fan - he is an alumnus of the college I went to, and he mentions that a bit.

Some don't like his shtick, but as a person, he's aces.

I bet he's a great guy in person. Well spoken, bright guy.

But his volume level as an announcer, which is no doubt a byproduct of his high energy level, is truly annoying to me. I change the channel when I hear him, he just drives me nuts.

Knows the game, he's dialed in, but just can't get past his routine to listen to him.

+1. Had a hard time watching the Gators - Wildcats game last night. Glad the Gators won. I'm sure he's a nice guy in person as he is on TV. Doesn't seem like anything would ever make that guy upset and seems to love his job thoroughly.

I like him and enjoy his coverage. He seems so genuinely interested in the game.

May be a wonderful human being, but he is the worst announcer ever.

You may be the Bob Costas type....I think he makes what to me is a boring game more interesting and watchable. Ying and Yang.

He can be way over the top when doing games. He can bring excitement to games but often goes overboard. He is also biased on which teams he likes. They dont Call him Dukey V for nothing.
