This will be interesting....they want to remove the chances that drivers who aren't at the top of the grid sit out Q3. I say to let them go back to the single-session free-for-all of the old days, with no fuel or tire penalties. It may be the only time we see the cars running flat-out this season.

It sounds like the government....rules beget more rules, repeat ad infinitum.

Remember when racing didn't seem to have many rules?

Pirelli said they would make qualifying only tires IF ALL teams agreed.

Yes agreed, but for a quick improvement at this stage, for Q3 an additional set of tyres to be used explicitly during that session should be suffice.

    +1

The problem with the 'old days' was that the guys we wanted to see sat in the garage for the first 60 minutes... The damn track was empty for the first 30......

I like the Q1/2/3 format, at least it forces them to run.

This actually sounds like a reasonable proposal to me.

    Cheers,
    Ian

True, but that's the case with any and all proposed rule changes at this stage.

    Cheers,

Single session free-for-all with mandatory running.

Like the old days when they had qualifying motors that lasted about 4-5 laps and tires that lasted like 3. Let em rip!

The current qualifying format is great, but just give them an extra set of tires for Q3 so the teams will not have incentive to sit in the garage. Fixed. How hard was that?!

Quali is the only thing that's gotten better in F1 over the last decade.

How about letting them turn up the boost also, 1000hp and sticky qually tyres :)

Pirelli have said they'll do it if they all agree..... Extra set of tires & no BS about starting on your qualy rubber would be a remarkably sane move.

Which of course means it's unlikely to happen. ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Yes true!!. Good point. I do enjoy the Q1/2/3 format.

The old format was great too but it all happened very quickly, was super exciting and then was over ... reads like I am talking about something else :p :D

Sounds like a good idea to me. Always hated seeing drivers sitting out. I would LOVE to see quali only tires also.
