I borrowed it, from a close friend!!

They keep the piles of notes for me, when I roll into Austin.

Yours was a very very good example Harry and I was keen to buy it when originally offered from Hairpin if I recall. But I'm happy with my 365 now. It was also
great to see it at Salon Prive on that barmy summers day, lovedo that interior!!
    Congrats on great sale price.

    Paul.

Obviously as I've been working on the Vetro I've noticed it's production number stamped into various parts, #30,
a nice number showing it's early place in the 308 production run.

But it's only been over the winter as I was refurbishing the interior that I saw my first hand written number, this
one on the back of the door cards, good to see 'Giuseppe' had a nice artistic flourish to his hand writing!

Wonder why 'Giuseppe' wrote it upside down? Or could it be just a picture he drew at lunch of a sperm and an egg? :)

That is the assembly number, Mike. It is nothing to do with how early it was in the production run. It's a reference for the assembly team so build parts are matched. There's plenty on here about them if you search the term.

That is not exactly my understanding. For me, Assembly Numbers are sequential and match the order in which cars were assembled in Maranello, but we have to be careful about the fact those sequences depend on the model. There is, to my knowledge, one sequence for Euro cars, one for American cars, one for Right hand drive cars, possibly one for Australian cars... That said, Ferrari changed their way of working later on, and started to reset Assembly Numbers at the beginning of the new year (calendar? Model year? Not sure about that). I know for a fact it was the case when 328 were produced, but I don't know if they started doing it at some point of the 308 production.

Mike, in your case, I believe your car was the 30th British market car. Mine is the 151th Euro car. It is very hard to say what number your car is in the total 308GTB production. In my case, I don't think there were many non LHD euro cars before my car, so my car may be the 160th 308 GTB, or something close to that. For your car on the other hand, I have no idea were the 30th British car would be placed in the total production.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong in any way, as mike puts it, we're always learning and it won't be the first time I'm proved wrong! ;-)

Thanks for that, I guess it's one of those things we'll never really be able to confirm, I suspect though that things were not quite as organised as that back in those days!

That's for sure. But that's also why it's so fun to try to understand what happened 40 years ago! ;-)

How can you tell? I looked at the pics though I don't know what I'm looking for. But the ad says it's a dry sump.

First picture is a wet sump engine, notice on the block to the right The oil filler cap.

The second picture is a dry sump, notice the big black container on the bottom left, and the engine block does not have the oil filler cap.

For the price, this ain't no dry sump michelotto car.

If it was, it would of sold 10x by now at this price.

Here is a real michelotto dry sump car.

the only real way to find out is to take the vin and call michelotto direct and ask them. They have a record of all their cars and will validate. My guess, they took a wet sump engine and converted. If memory serves me, all the michelotto 308s we're dry sump only, not conversions.
