Jolly: this car is an inevitable sacrifice in the making.. we went thru that.. just enjoy the triple white. I may go knock to build a snow man on the driver seat to complete the scene!

Reminds me, I once built a snow countach in grade school...

 

For you Peter, I'll do anything.. LOL. If we get that freezing rain over the 10"of snow it will be awsome! Now i will need to get out of my house!
Imagine being able to picture a mount of snow and say "there is a countach unde there!" you could actually comission a kid or someone in need to dig up the snow and say "if you find anything under there, it's yours". Imagine the possibilities to do something good!...
I am trying so hard to remain positive and sharing the pain does help...

 

I'd suggest the true flywheel figure could probably be a little higher than this.

On an average rwd car (circa 200bhp) its suggested that losses are around 17% (good car, good condition etc etc) this figure tends to fall as power increases (as some losses inside the transmission are fixed whereas others are not).

Lamborghini's system for the engine/gearbox/diff is somewhat ingenious on a packaging front but by in effect sending the power forwards and then backwards it isn't likely to be the last word in efficiency (as well as being 70's tech)

One things for sure, you cannot ever measure true transmission losses on a rolling road - anyone who says otherwise is either misguided or is trying to sell snake oil

Fabulous story Stefano, however it does leave some room for doubt.

Scrapped is an "interesting" term that really tells us nothing
Scrapped by who ? - Mira, the Factory or as is quite likely some local yard with a contract to haul off unwanted wrecks
how was it scrapped ? Cut up, melted down, stuck on a pile with other scrap?
when was it scrapped ? the week it was crashed, 2 weeks later, a month, a year
where was it scrapped ? Mira, somewhere nearby, or was it taken and done at the Factory

Back in the 70's (and possibly into the 80's) ie 30+ yrs after the war ended, many uk scrap yards still contained ww2 aircraft fuselage, wings, engines etc - several spitfires and other warbirds still with us today (some actually flying now) were airframes marked as scrapped and believed lost for years until rescued from these yards.

The factory would tell you they scrapped it, but against all the odds its now back with us.

Several other competition ferraris near worthless once crashed were stored/chucked in a scrap heap etc etc and have been found now and restored.

The same is true of multiple cars from the Lamborghini Factorys own scrap yard, discarded and forgotten, some might say "scrapped" but are now saved and back with us.


The bottom line is that unless stated clearly otherwise scrapped means disposed of, it doesn't necessarily mean destroyed

I've been directly involved with a "specific workshop" which asked me where to buy Campagnolo 15" wheels... because they are restoring a Periscopa whose wheels were destroyed... and this is not a rumor.

I provided them the link to buy these wheels and they thank me so much.

Don't ask me about the VIN, I don't know and they didn't allow me to look at it and they refused to tell me more about, it is "top secret" !

 

I wish it did, but no I'm simply stating that scrapped doesn't mean destroyed and showing examples to help prove it.

If the prototype does somehow show up (and I for one hope it does) then I just wanted to show how it could happen (and indeed has happened with other cars and planes) and refute Stefano's presumption that it could only be a fake.

If it does appear sometime I'm sure we will all want to see a chain of evidence of where its been and how it got there etc, but miracles do happen on occasion - #0846, the Miura protyotype chassis and Seafire SX300 being 3 such examples and not the only ones either.

 

Believe it or not, this car is a diamond. 20k for an lp400s back in the day. No one want to touch it with a 10ft pole.

 

The more I consider it the more I feel a fake good enough to fool the experts would be nigh on impossible to achieve.

Too many photos exist - not grainy pics from the 30's such as with the German cars you mention but magazine and publicity shots with good detail.

We know where welds existed but not just that but we can see the size, shape, quality, details of such welds - could these be accurately copied ?

The body and interior was much modified for scoops, equipment etc - evidence for this would have to be present

A preproduction engine would need to be aquired - from where exactly ?

Multiple one off parts not seen on production models would again need to be obtained.

Then there's the damage to the chassis and bodywork - again its known exactly what creased and bent and where etc.
Would they build their fake car then crash it and modify the repairs so it corresponds ? (impossible ?)
People will want to see pics before and after repairs as well as evidence of damage and repair.

Would they build an interior, add in years of neglect and then restore it ????

Finally would it all be worth it?
In effect you would need to build the base car, damage it, age it all and then restore it again.
So a full build then a full restoration twice the work etc
For a car not representative of a production car, probably not useable (especially if you wanted to have the clean lines it had originally)

And thats before we consider the secrecy factor, which in today's modern technological age wouldnt be easy to achieve.

 

I agree speaking of a fake/reproduction... but what about IF it is the real thing is undergoing a full restoration, even with a non matching engine.

Who can tell about ?

For instance, Joe brought us a nice surprise with the come back of the original 1st Miura rolling chassis, restored in USA by well known fellow, considering it was vanished from Public for 40 years...

 

In todays day and age anyone who found this car and didn't at the very least show it to several marque experts in its damaged as found form would be beyond foolish. They wouldn't have to make it totally public but that might well help them too.

Bringing in marque experts from the beginning would help establish provenance plus if made properly public they would likely be inundated with photos, drawings etc etc.

Absolute secrecy would not be the way forward on this sort of project

 

with this assumption, all will also depends WHO is restoring it... if it could be guys like Oracio Salvioli, Colin Clarke, Gary Bobileff...

 

I personally don't feel who restored it would be that important (as long as a good job was done) but more that the right people had been contacted and offered the chance to inspect the car at various stages including before any work commenced. That transparency is the most important aspect I feel.


What I also feel strongly about is that if this car does exist and is located in a lock up/workshop/barn/garage somewhere then we the enthusiasts have a right to know its still there somewhere.
If I was told in secrecy id respect that, but would (and do) feel the owner of such a car has an obligation to at least acknowledge its existence to the world. I don't mean shout loudly 'it's mine and it's located here so come and ogle" more of letting it be known that "the car exists, a collector/enthusiast owns it, its in this country and it will/won't be restored" pref along with a few photos that don't have to show anything other than its genuine.

 

No offense..but this is the "craziest" thing I have ever heard.. NO ONE has ANY RIGHT to know anything about ANY car other then their own...(unless in the process of purchasing the car from the owner then regular rules apply)

SURE..but do we as "enthusiasts" have a RIGHT or the OWNER is OBLIGATED to share HIS/HER vehicle with us...

I agree with you Roy, there is NO obligation to share with the world, I can understand secrecy untill it is fully restored, following that assumption of course !

 

At no point did I say we should have the right to know who owns it, how long they've owned it, where they store it, what their plans for it are etc.

BUT

a vehicle such as this is a historic landmark, do we have the right to know it still exists - too f****** right we do.

 

Then I'd suggest you should try reading some of your old posts, that'd be a good place to start.

 

I have NEVER ever demanded that someone is required or obligated to share their information on their car with us, requested maybe..REQUIRED never..

Simple answer to your question..NOPE you have no right to "Jack S**T", you don't own the car...and I am not aware of any new World Law that requires owners of their own property to share what they have, regardless of its historic value or not.
