    Would much rather see pictures of the continued progress and Tim's write-ups on what is happening. Tim obviously contracted with the right group of guys to restore / upgrade his F40 and that is why the debris in the headers was discovered. These guys know how to correct this discovery, so let's get back to the fun of the restoration and Tim's stories.

    Dashboard now installed and switches being finalised pending removal for trim. Trim, now that is a word I have not thought of for a long time.

    Thought this response from Zircotec was both professional and informative:

    Our investigation has confirmed that the foreign material found inside your pipes was almost certainly loose-fill packing material used when the parts were originally shipped to Zircotec. We suspect that some of this material had jammed inside one of the pipes and had survived our own preliminary inspection and cleaning operations. It had then melted and fused to the inside wall of the pipe during our own processing operations (when the pipe wall reaches circa 200°C). As far as we are aware, this is the first time this has ever occurred.

    We have now successfully removed all of the foreign material. We used a thin copper rod to physically dislodge material fused to the pipe wall. We also pulled through a soft wire brush to ensure all small pieces of material had been dislodged. We noted that there were some small nodules of material remaining at this stage. These were removed by filling the pipe with solvent and dissolving away all of the remaining organic matter. Then after draining the solvent we baked the pipes at elevated temperature to remove all remaining traces. Final inspection has confirmed that all of the foreign matter has been removed.

    We have of course reviewed our own internal procedures as a result of this issue.

    An embarrassing slip-up given the exposure your thread has here and elsewhere but a nicely written and gracious response by them. It is indeed a credit to the eagle-eyed and ever professional personnel at MotoT that they spotted this.

    I know a chap who had invested a lot of money in an engine swap and turbo upgrade to a GTR which subsequently failed. The cause was a rag left somewhere on the up-side of the turbo. Very similar issue really.

    Lord knows I've made more than my fair share of them. At this point it's a "No harm, no foul" situation. I read their response as reflecting they are a respectable firm who cares about the service they supply to their clients.

    I think that is correct. Also given the lengths they went to so as to solve the issue it totally validates our decision to 'return to sender' as this rectification process would have been beyond us.

    Cannot wait to see them mounted this week.

    I think I forgot to answer a question earlier in this thread as to whether braided hoses were standard on LM's and the answer is yes as attached.

    Dash now complete. Not happy with the lights, so those will change for something neater when we can locate, but meanwhile it now enables us to get the Motec loom sorted. We will also try and lose the Motec nomenclature to tidy it up.

    While MoTeC is awesome, I actually prefer AiM. First, it is Italian (not always a good thing), not Australian. Second, it has all of those lights integrated, with 6 programmable warning lights on the sides and shift lights on top. AiM does not offer engine management computers or software, however, and so may also not integrate both the data/dash and ECU as seamlessly as does MoTeC, and AiM does not date back to the 1990s, so is not as "vintage." I suspect the F40LM may have had MoTeC in the day.

    i'm not sure if it's a bit 'backyard' for this high class build, but nailpolish remover is very handy at removing printed logos on plastic.

    I think Tim made the right choice going with a complete MOTEC integrated system and really it is a little too late to go back now. Personally I do not mind the MOTEC "nomenclature" as it takes nothing away from the vehicle in my opinion. Since the car was a "privateer effort", who can say it did not run a MOTEC system in it's original form or some version of?? It is an advancement over the "old school" MOTEC version.

    Many reasons to go with Motec.

    If you have been sleepless enough to read the entire thread you will recall we looked at all alternatives. Chief amongst the benefits of Motec is that we have access to the software from a race team that runs Motec on an LM, which like us runs same turbos, same adjustable wastegates etc. No guinea pigging which could go on for ever. Start with Aim or others and where do get the code to control this lot and who will stand behind it?

    Second it currently appears that we have highly experienced local helpful technical support and that, in the UK, you would find difficult on Marelli or Aim, indeed I tried during my investigations.

    That was just for starters but I really did not need to go much further.

    As to the lights, as you correctly assume, they will indicate what we want them to indicate, but mostly warnings, rather better than the original red fog light mounted in the dash. Also bear in mind that this car will also be road legal so within the Motec unit will be a speedometer, odometer etc, yet another benefit.

    Thanks for the detail, Tim and sorry to not be fully up to speed on this really great thread. For the engine ECU, it makes complete sense to use what a team already has and in any event AiM does not make an engine ECU. And while it is useless for this project, I mentioned AiM solely as a data acquisition/dash system and they do claim to interface with the MoTeC engine ECU. AiM will do speedo and has a very versatile configurable dash.

    For example, the AiM Pista dash is supposed to be able to accept the MoTeC M400, 600 and 800 CAN protocol and M4, 48 and 8 RS232:

    I mentioned this because I have used AiM and actually find the support is pretty good, but can't say if is any good in UK. Just an FYI for any future projects. The better fix for you is probably to put in some nice flush-fitting high intensity LEDs on the existing assembly you photographed. Oh and the dash will likely be more visible in the cockpit instead of on the transaxle

    You are spoilt in the States. Also difficult getting support from anyone for such a minuscule project. We had the same issue with turbos and only Garrett were supportive.

    We will find some better lights but any suggestions very welcome.

    And in an attempt to actually contribute, an LED that flush panel mounts and can be around 5000 mcd (I think you want warning lights to actually be distracting and I think this is pretty bright) is this:

    I think you made a great choice with the MoTeC i have a similar setup to yourself but in a subaru.

    Just a question instead of adding additonal lights why dont you utilise the leds from the SLM??

    My SLM apart from acting as a rev light actually has warning lights for engine temp, oil pressure, fuel etc.

    You can make the warning lights any colour you like.
