my 456 M GT horn doesn't work, took the steering wheel off, checked the wires, there is power going through, but only about 8 volts or less, could this be the reason why is not sounding, could it be a relay or fuse problem? any idea what I should be checking or changing?

    thanks

Mine sounds like a the washer pump when i press the horn button, could be the compresser thats what the parts guy said at Continental out of Hinsdale Il, my car sat for 7 years so maybe its an easy fix its just one of those troubleshooting things you either have a one dollar problem or a one thousand dollar problem. Good luck and let me know, Deke.

Deke, did you ever figure out a fix for your horn problem? Mine sounds like an anemic baby lamb, or perhaps just like the washer motor like you mentioned. Fuse is fine, I am going to replace the bosch relay just to rule that out as well.
    Thanks.

Paul- Make sure the hoses from the compressor to the horns and Y connector are in good shape and tightly connected.

Those horn kits are expensive, $300+ from Ricambi.

Thanks, you are a wealth of knowledge Taz! I can't see the horn(s) from the engine compartment, do I need to remove the undertray and access from under the car? I opened up the Fiamm 3000 compressor and everything spins freely, although I did find a spring just sort of sitting in there. I can't see how it does anything at all. I need an attachment for my air compressor so that I could test the horns/connections by sending some air down the tube. That will be my project tomorrow.

Paul- If you do not have a 456M workshop manual, I sent one, and the expanded electrical section, to Ben Deetman at ferraridatabase.com. You can download it for free. Unfortunately, the trumpets are pneumatic, so the expanded section L does not do you much good.

The trumpets are normally forward near the grille and I am not sure exactly how you access them. One of the 456M owners may know. Best I could say is follow the hose from the compressor.

I ran some compressed air down the tube and the horn blew nice and loud, so the connections down there are fine which means it is my HIAMM 3000 compressor that seems to be the problem. It spins fine and the vanes inside are loose and moving. It just doesn't seem to get enough air out of it.

Yes the FIAMM. That is a great price for sure! I went and got a replacement compressor, installed it and had the exact same issue, so I hooked the horns that came with the new kit up to the old compressor and they work great. That means the issue is something to do with the horns even though I put about 20 psi down the hose and they sounded off nicely before I bought the new kit. So I left the old compressor in and just put a hose to one new horn and found a spot to hide it. So now I guess I have 3 trumpets with only the new one hooked up. I don't really care as long as I have a loud horn to tell people to get out of my way!

So the FIAMM is a replacement to the Ricambi?

Paul- Ricambi is the primary sponsor of this site and a great place to buy parts. Very reliable.

Those horns are pretty bullet proof, so sounds like you have a leak along the hoses somewhere. Your big compressor had enough flow to set them off regardless of the leak, but not the little 12 volt ones.

Original sound from the horn is really crap IMHO. Any alternative anyone found?

Henri- Mine (575M) sounds fine. Just like the one on my Daytona.

    Huh????

The Serie 2000 trumpets are the Ferrari sound. Nothing else made duplicates their sound. It is a unique signature sound.

    Air horns, but not Ferrari....
The Stebel GPS and Hella air horns make an identical duo tone. The FIAMM Grand Prix offers a Lamborgini Countach sound. All are alternative air horn sounds if the Ferrari sound doesn't sit well with you. Anything outside the airhorn arena on a Ferrari is sacrilege.

    Wolo horns are junk.

My 550 horn is stock but not very authoritative. I'll leave it that way.

My 1995 F355 Challenge lost its horn in 1995. It's street-legal so I installed a reproduction 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner horn. It has a quick-release steering wheel so I wired the horn to the central door unlock switch on the console.

The sound is way more commanding. ;)

Let's rephrase and say that I do not like the horn sound.

Some poster's daughter calls it the, "clown car" horn, which I think is hilarious, but that's the traditional Ferrari sound. I love it. Those air horns are no longer DOT approved, BTW, so the newer Ferraris have a different sound. I think I'd be tempted to change back to the air horns. :)

    Cheers,

    Geo

Sears has the Fiamm Riviera model kit for $35. Includes compressor, relay , and hoses.
    Sounds great.
