Originally, I believe. But I am advised that the integrity of the car is preserved if (as is now the case with 4139) one combines a modest metallic element in the paintwork.
I am happy to announce my second 250 GTE 2+2 investment. I just finalized the deal and wired my payment for the 1961 250 GTE 2+2, #2709. Currently it is dark grey with a black and sadly a black vinyl interior. The numbers are matching and most of the car survived the past 53 years intact. We believe it was red before the current color but we are not sure what color it was originally. It's a decent driver with a clean body, good running engine and gear box. It is missing bumpers and fog lights. The most interesting thing about this car is that it has a hood scoop. I did some research on other GTEs with factory installed hood scoops and it looks identical. Once the car is mated with the missing parts it is going into storage. I'll upload a photo when it has the bumpers and fog lights installed. I am going to meet someone this weekend who I hope will sell me another GTE. Since it's not on the market wish me luck
Congrats! But I am not sure if there ever was a GT/E with a factory installed hood scoop. Pininfarina in particular designed the GT/E without a scoop as the wind tunnel testing showed that the radically sloping bonnet will create some downforce to make the car more stabile at high speed. Best wishes, Kare
Yes we are not sure it was a factory original but if you google search 250 GTEs with hood scoops they look alike the Lusso and GT coupes. I need to investigate this alot more before I can conclusively decide if it was factory but it does look like it.
here is one GT/E 4047 with hood scoop. this car is advertise in Slovakia for sale..i guess this one was at Fantasy junction. Julius Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's nice that you bought the car, but these machines deserve to be driven and seen. Too bad it's going into storage.
Yes I agree. In case you missed my earlier posts I said I am storing them till I restore them. I'm trying to collect a few more before I start restoring them later this year or early next year. The intention is to build a small fleet of very nice 250 GTEs.
I think it is joke 700 000 here: http://ferrari-challenge.autobazar.eu/ferrari-250-gte-rocnik-1960-id3818065.html Julius
there is written that price is negotiable, car has slovak plates, one of the last original pieces in the world also can be seen here in Slovakia 2 owners with history files etc.. Dont know if this is for real just a friend of mine sent it to me and asked if i know this car. Julius
There was a GTE with a factory delivered hood scoop that Jerry Bessinger had about a year ago. It was wrecked shortly after being delivered. It was custom utility for the owner of Riva boats.
I think #2709 belonged to Dick Merrit at one time. The Slovakian car's scoop is not a factory hoodscoop. Factory hoodscoops were like the scoops found on 250 Cab series 2. Not sure factory scoops were done at the factory - probably sourced out locally.
I recall back in 1967 and '68 when I was looking for a 250 GTE that I saw at least one with a hood scoop.
Dick Merritt did own the car in the late 1960s, but was not the original owner. He says he remembers it having the Hood Scoop and being dark red at the time.
Great thanks for this great information. We do believe this car was red before its current grey color. Unfortunately a flat red like Rosso Corsa is not a great color for the GTE. In my honest opinion anything metalic (Silver, Light to Dark Blue, Grey) brings out the best of the lines on this car. Since the hood scoop seem original to the car, we have been thinking about building a cold air box like the other Ferrari's of the era with hood scoops. I also was thinking about changing from 3 to 6 weber carburetors like the GTO but I have been advised against this foolish notion.
My wife's uncle's GTE had an original hood scoop. #3637. He sold the car a long time for a huge sum after they found out it had the wrong engine in it which was a comp. SWB motor. One of the few times you could buy a GTE with the wrong motor and have it work out handsomely for you.
Hm, I already tried to post but did not work. 3903 is after the Artcurial sale, two weeks ago, now in northern Germany.
