Factory racing exhaust vs others

This was an excellent thread (died a year ago) on the Ferrari racing exhaust. With the benefit of time, I would like to get people's opinions. I would use the exhaust on a 2001 360 spider with the factory cats.
1) Can I use the factory tips with bypass valves to keep the sound reasonable except at heavy throttle?
2) Will the valves throw off the remapped CPU that comes with the exhaust?
3) How does the sound compare to the capisto, both quality and volume?
4) I rarely drive more than 15 minutes and no expressway. I like loud cars but not resonance or hearing loss. Am I likely to find this too loud, especially if I can use the bypass valves?

The Ferrari factory racing exhaust kit comes complete with everything you need to install the system. It comes with the bypass valves already connected to the CS style exhaust tips. It will idle a little louder than stock ( which is what everybody wants!) and still allow a conversation with the top down at normal speeds under 4k rpm. The new ECU's need to be programmed from FNA to your Vin to work with the alarm system and it alters the fuel map for the free exhaust flow it also opens the bypass valves at 6k instead of the 4k you have now. You can install the system without changing the ECU's and it will still work fine. The cost to program from FNA is $75. There were several dealers selling these kits on eBay for $1500 last year, which was a STEAL! You will need the spider kit ending in 217 since it has the mounting bracket for a spider. I had mine installed at Ferrari Ft.Lauderdale last year for $2300 complete during the annual service and it comes with a 2 year factory warranty since it was installed by a dealer. It is louder than the tubi but has a lower growling tone where the tubi is a higher pitch tone at WOT. It was the best mod I did to the car to date, couldn't be any happier with the new sound!

 

Factory tail pipes and exhaust valves cannot be transfered. The muffler is not as wide as the oem. The new kit comes with valves and everything already attached to the muffler. Its a great system. At idle she has a nice snarl which is very nice. Not crazy loud - just right and ripe. When you push her is when it gets wild.. Really wild.. Its great.. I would not try and piece meal the kit together. It wont work.. Valves are valves.. the ecu tells them when to open and how much. I would think that they are the same. In any event.. the factory race set up is the top dog. Nothing sounds better. Capristo level 3 sounds nice as well but its 2nd.. Go for it.. you will not be disappointed. Kits for the spider and coupe (F1) are the same from what I am being told from FNA.. Early on they had the ecu's pre-programmed and thats why there was a deviation with part numbers. I did not change the ecus as I have a Euro. I like the valves opening at 4000 rpm and did not want to mess with them.. If you buy the kit from a dealer you give them your vin number - they send the ecu's to FNA for program. There is no fee. FNA also updates the build spec of your car to show factory race exhaust as part of the build spec. FNA ships programmed ecu's back to dealer - dealer then places ecus back in the kit and delivers the complete kit to you (either pick up or mail). You should be in receipt of a complete kit. It just takes a few days after you pay for them to send ecu's to FNA and for them to ship back to dealer so its not a same day process. You pay - wait a few days then get your kit.. maybe a week tops..

Glad to hear the new kits come with tips and bypass valves. That makes it easy. So far we have two rave reviews. Any idea why someone would pay 5k for capisto if this system is as good as it seems? Did this exhaust come stock on any models such as the challenge stradelle?

 

I think that some people prefer to go aftermarket because of the different tone. I have had a couple of 360 customers who were initially looking into the factory race exhaust, but found that it was too low pitched for what they were looking for.

The factory race exhaust sounds excellent, but it is a lower tone, very raw and aggressive sounding exhaust. Some people just prefer the higher pitched wail that you get with Fabspeed, Tubi, Capristo, etc.

 

Dont bother with the ecus. No need.

For me I tried with valves hooked up and you get a refined sound just a hair louder than stock at idle and put putting around. When you get on it is when it seperates itself by a good margin from stock.

I have since plugged up the valve hoses and drive with valves open all the time. This gives the car a little less refined but balsy and very ferrari ish sound at low rpm. Going up in rpm in both modes gives you a glorious ferrari sound leaving drivers around you slack jawed

There is no drone in either mode. I will say it wasnt as loud as people said especially in valves closed state.
the kit comes with 4 handy plugs for the hoses. Save 2 and use 2 to plug and enjoy your 40v masterpiece.


I offered ferrari of tampa 1650 shipped to my door on ebay and they accepted my offer. Its about 300 at indy shop for install

 

Ferrari exhaust is 4800 list as well but dealers are trying to get rid of stock.

After market exhaust have the stupid ferrari tax is why you see the ridiculous prices.

And dont give me the **** about r&d lower volume blah blah.

Look at a set of mustang headers and tell me why ferrari should cost 10x

We expect to spend more money on expensive cars sure but gouging is gouging.

 

Our car is the shop for a rebuild at the moment and we had the same discussion with my son.
We managed to drive two similar cars with different setup.
The "sport upgrade" seems to be in tone in the mid revs, without any drone, but lacks pitch on high revs.
I would describe it as the ultimate "cruising" exhaust. Makes quite an impression to nearby listeners when the car passes by on mid revs and is joyfull on downsifts from these revs also.
In high revs, it sounds muscular and deep, giving the impression that there is more to come, but it never happens.

The capristo, is the lunatic that breaks his chains, grabs a chainsaw and looks you in the face with his red eyes throwing flames.
Totally different world there.
No youtube video or recording can replicate this schizofrenic grawl that penetrates your ears when you pass through a tunnel.

The feelings you get from the first one describe the Factory upgrade, the second defines the Capristo.

 

When I first started looking, they told me you could not install the racing exhaust on a 99 because FNA would not program it. A year later FNA will program it and now I would go for a racing exhaust but during that time I installed a Capristo and I am NOT going back, the twin-sound in awesome. nice and quiet in town and screams when the valves open.

 

Great feedback! I was just reading on Ferrari life that the racing exhaust is the same as the challenge stradale and f430 exhaust. Does this sound correct?

 

Yes. Factory race exhaust makes your car sound exactly like a stradale.

Apparently not exactly since the air boxes, ECUs (which obviously you can change) change the sound, I've read. Must be close though.

I just ordered one and I may fit it instead of my Tubi. Will see...

Nice. Considerable weight savings too. Yes its the same exhaust as cs and f430. 430 gets different after muffler pipes tips. Stradale is exactly same

My car has the race exhaust from Ferrari.

When I started it up a guy with a 16M said that it sounded fantastic...Nuff said.

 

For me even if price was same for all exhausts, id still get the factory. Its high quality, properly engineered, you get the extras like heat shields and its not an aftermarket piece that could steer buyers away when you sell the car.

Purely on sound merit, I place it in the top 3

 

I understand your POV and the re-sell ability is totally logical. However, like with anything, changing from OEM ( even if it is with other OEM products that are much louder ) it could be considered a turn off to some buyers. Just wanted to point out that not all aftermarket options are created equal. We have put A LOT of time and engineering into our system and it's something that the company and I, as an employee, are very proud to sell alongside OEM products.

BTW, You also get heat shields with Fabspeed's muffler, if that's what you are after

I agree.. I think most buyers are looking for upgraded exhaust. Factory Race set up will trump all others.. No disrespect to the exhaust guys out there.. The products are fantastic.. For this application (360) - Factory Race setup is the shnizle.. Evan.. I would have no issue ever putting any exhaust products that you guys manufacturer on my car.. You got good stuff.. Just not better then factory package.. ..

Interesting how the factory exhaust sounds so good when the valve open mode is basically the noise of the engine straight through the cats! Does anything actually flow through the muffler when the valves open?!

 

Can't argue with that logic one bit I love OEM+

Fabspeed –
Had it on a 2004 Maserati 4200 One pipe didn’t bolt up proper, lots of photos & phone calls later they agreed to send the proper pipe. It cost me an additional $125 labor to have a mechanic tear it apart and replace it, yet this cost was of no interest to the folks at Fabspeed. Exhaust sound was OK / kind of “muscle car”

Ferrari Race Exhaust –
Have it on my 2004 Spyder as original equipment, excellent sound, true Ferrari !

 

That's a beautiful setup. I assume you have something similar for a standard 430? What are the options?
