Ooooofff! Why do all of these look like they went thru the ringer? Maybe I'm being to judgmental but when they don't even take the time to clean it up for a decent pic I'm very, very leary.

Guess I'm doomed to buy one new.

How would this even fit under the rear deck lid? You would have to cut and modify it. Can't imagine it looking good.

Sweet! I didn't think this was still available. Do we have any firsthand accounts with this?

I'd love to go this route but I wouldn't unless I had confirmation from someone here that it was a decent kit and wouldn't grenade my engine.

If you search back to around late 2008/early 2009, there should be a very lengthy multipage thread on this…I'm thinking it was 15 pages or thereabouts. Someone here "donated" their car as the test mule for the kit. Lot's of good info and development work in the thread. Hopefully the thread is still available via search.

928 no longer makes their supercharger for the 3x8. They offered to sell me their last one but I had just spent about $8K on a major service and other stuff and couldn't wing it. I would love to have one and maybe they decided to start selling them again but they never did take it off their website so I kind of doubt it.

Before Carl over at 928 did the supercharger, I was doing this with a Vortech unit and before me Mark E was doing this, and that listing looks very much like Marks setup from ages ago. And I'm sure there have been many other supercharger builds over the yrs.

I still have the original supercharger setup I did on my Mondial, and have at times over the last couple yrs thought of selling it. I don't use the vortech setup anymore having moved to rotrex and EFI.

I still toy with the idea of doing a turbo build one day, the problem has been and will always be the heat...

That's Mark's original supercharger. He sold it on eBay if I recall correctly to finance the second supercharger (that Todd has a copy of that Mark made for a client).

He was making something like 350hp at the crank if I remember right with that first blower. It's a really nice setup actually. Or, at least was. This was like ten years ago now.

"928 no longer makes their supercharger for the 3x8. "

I was under the impression that they don't "stock" the kit but can supply it if one is ordered, they just have to gather the parts so there would be a short wait for them to do that. But maybe that has changed. ?

It's funny how many of us think of boosting their cars and even purchase parts / kits but just never get around to the installation phase. I have gathered multiple parts for both single and dual turbo setups for the QV, but never "pulled the trigger". Part of the reason has been that I always felt the supercharging was the way to go on these cars, especially for the street. Maybe when I finish all the other projects on my plate......

There were parts that had to be machined in bulk to make it affordable. They told me that they weren't selling enough 'kits' to make it viable. The numbers just didn't line up according to what I was told.

I am all for a "group buy" if we could get the price down around $5K.

"The numbers just didn't line up according to what I was told."

That's too bad but I guess it's not really surprising; in the actual scheme of things there aren't many Ferrari 3x8s and I'd bet that very few owners who would actually be interested in such a thing. As a friend of mine told me in the last few days, "If you want a faster Ferrari, BUY a faster Ferrari!" :)

    But sadly, If I want a faster Ferrari that LOOKS like a 3x8, I guess I need a 288 GTO. Hmm, where'd I put that extra 500k I had laying around here…

(actually I have no idea what 288 GTOs cost)

That's true. Most people want to keep theirs as stock as possible as they will probably bring more money when sold as "Original" in the future. I don't have that problem as mine was converted to a Koenig Specials right after leaving the Ferrari factory. It is cost prohibitive to convert it back to stock.

So what hp/tq numbers do any of the kits get? Anyone have any real world numbers?

"So what hp/tq numbers do any of the kits get? Anyone have any real world numbers?"

Well, the HP/torque is simply a function of boost/fuel and with the 928 system, the boost is determined by the pulley ratio and the pop-off valve. The biggest issue is the HP increase that is compatible with the rest of the drivetrain. Basically, most cars can accept 1/3 more power without drivetrain concerns. Beyond that and you need upgrades to the rest of the components.

Typically, folks add a heavier clutch first but that's a major mistake. The clutch is the "safety" valve. If you upgrade the clutch to handle, say 50% more power, all you are doing is transferring the "break point" (a slipping clutch - cheap to replace) to expensive hard part, like U joints, axles, tranny gears, etc. So if you are going beyond around 33% (which that kit will EASILY do if you choose to) you are looking at major (and, IMO, unrealistic/EXPENSIVE) changes to the drivetrain.

When I was seriously considering this kit, I was looking around 340HP at the flywheel - a substantial increase over the stock 260 - that would be pretty dramatic performance-wise but should not overstress the rest of the drivetrain.

The year I was planning to do it, the IRS decided they needed my money that would have gone for the kit. Since then I essentially lost interest and content myself with driving a 328 that a soccer mom in her Toyota can outrun! :(

Hi all, I am new to the forum ( but have owned a QV for 25 yrs) and thought I might comment on this. I completely rebuilt my euro QV engine 10 years ago and had Norwood's build the turbo charger and exhaust. I converted to Motec EFI and use a kevlar lined clutch. I run 100% avgas (100LL) for fuel.
The main thing I would say to anyone interested is that if you have never driven a 308 with over 500 RWHP you don't know what you are missing. I think turbocharging for a 3x8 is the best way to go if you want serious power. The acceleration is unbelievable!! In my experience the tires are the 'fuse'. I wanted a fast Ferrari with the classic 308 style I love. Just my experience and .02 cents.
