I knew that would get you guys to look...

Simple DIY for MT shifter ball. I know this has been posted but I have a few additions.

Here is a pic of my shifter ball -truly nasty. I hated it.

Well the ball seemed like a chromed steel not aluminum like other posts claim. Just too heavy to be aluminum. Also what is described in other posts as lacquer I didn't seem to have any. I tried some chemical stripper and saw no evidence or lacquer. So I wet sanded it with 400 grit, then 1500 grit, then with metal polish.

Washed and cleaned the R,1...6, and gait diagram with a toothpick, masked (came up with a simple masking method if anyone is interested) and sprayed with red, white, green (wife's idea).

Yes I also had the wife polish my stick.

I was going to make a comment regarding your wife polishing your stick, and you refurbishing your one, ugly ball, but I think I'll keep it to myself :D

Your shifter on the other hand, looks good!

Yea, never used it before. Of all places I picked it up at that redneck ferrari parts store Tractor Supply, when I was buying some wood pellets today. Actually worked pretty well.

    I used rubbing compound/scratch remover when I did mine.. it lubricated..wait.. :)

I used a bolt and screwed it onto that and then put it into a drill and rotated it into a cloth with the rubbing compound on it. Looks like a mirror now! It looked so nice it made the other knob well..

You should get together with Sticky No More - Exotic Cars Interior Refinishing Services as there seems to be a symbiotic relationship with all the sticky parts. Robbie may be looking to grow his business.

On the other hand, I bought a new ball for $50 (so now I have a pair).

Too much labor, but a nice job nonetheless.

It's only when you see a mosquito landing on your balls that you

realize that there is always a way to solve problems without using

Curt, Good idea. Kind of the opposite of what I was going to do. I was gonna screw the ball and put the screw-ball in a vice, and hit it with a polishing pad on my high speed compound polisher. (Sounds painful) Didn't seem to need to mechanize the job but I may reconsider for a little better shine.

Word of advice from someone who knows ...... when you wife/girlfriend is polishing your stick get her to count, and change hands at 99 or she might get a wrist injury.
Also if your ball is covered in a lot of crud you might have to scratch it off ......... am I on the correct forum as my girlfriend has just looked at what I am typing so I am probably in trouble !!!!

Wow - looks great and like the colors. Seems like everyone missed the best part - how many of those ice cold Yuengling's do you recommend for this job?
