DIY timing belt progress...we have liftoff!!!

    Liftoff was successful but two mistakes were made.

    1. I bent the hell out of my shifter rod. I really should have removed the shifter rod instead of just pushing it forward. I was watching it carefully but It caught on the fan belt while almost all the way up. I will take it to a machine shop to be repaired, but I was disappointed that I damaged a part.

    2. The throttle cable is stuck on a bracket under a mess of hoses behind the fuel distributors as seen in the last pic. Any tricks for pulling it through?

    You can see the ratcheting straps I used to secure the rear of the car to the lift. I was afraid the car might be a little nose heavy with the engine out. I'm going to be doing the timing belt work under the car so I really want it to be secure. I should have a couple more feet of headroom to work with once I get the throttle cable removed.

    The throttle cable seems too thick to get through the hole in this bracket. Is there something else I need to remove to get it off?

    Did you remove the fitting at the end of the throttle cable? There should only be the threaded stud at end of the cable, or you will never get it through the fuel distributor base-housing.

    I lay a piece of plywood on top of the injectors and lay on the injector manifold and work on the throttle cable

    1. Yes, I too did that same stupid maneuver. Must take it out. I straightened in a vice. You'd never know.

    2. You must remove the fitting from the end of the throttle cable till there is just a threaded rod on the end of the cable. You're gonna have to put the car back down to do that though.

    BTW - Nobody wants to see your rear end. Just your cars, or your wifes...maybe. And get that ladder off the wall before you F up your paint!

    LOL! I'm so glad to hear two other idiots bent their shift rod the first time they did an engine out. Mine was also straightened in a vice.

    You must remove the fitting at the end of the throttle cable. The only thing left should be the threaded rod. It is no thicker than the cable housing itself. Don't lose that tiny little cotter pin!

    BTW - I'm not gay. That pic made me throw up a little in my mouth.

    Also, that first pic made me think of a lifted off road testarossa. KEWL!!!!

    There are more than two that bent the shifter rod! Next engine out the shifter rod is coming off first.

    I took the motor out with shifter rod connected... But I had to balance the motor at a 60 degree incline to do so... Not fun...

    I wonder why most of the threads suggest to leave it in... Is disconnecting it difficult? Doesn't sound like it... But you do risk screwing up your shifter alignment...

    forget crawling on top of the engine... skip the potential damage.

    a four section ladder folded into a scaffold fits over the back of the car just fine - a cut to fit sheet of 1/4" plywood makes it comfy.

    how do you take the engine out when the shifter rod is still connnected? this is impossible or I undertsand under shifter rod something other than you?

    you have to remove the screw no. 27

    I just followed the threads on here...

    You tilt the motor upwards at the front as you lift the car... this keeps the shifter from hitting anything...

    works... but its a pain...

    Plan to remove the shifter when putting the motor back in... I didn't even know removing the shifter was an option... I just didn't see anyone doing that in the posts...

    it is impossible to take the motor out when you do not disconnect the rod no 43 and no 6, and this you can only do by removing the screw no. 27

    you put in 2nd gear, remove the screw 27 and the the shifter you put to 3rd, so you have place to take the motor out

    Phil! It was your guide I used off Scrib-d. Thanks for doing it, it was very helpful...

    Tilting the engine, and disconnecting the airconditioner, were the biggest pains in the rear...

    The trick is in moving the engine rearwards as the car lifts upwards. Leaves loads of room for the shifter shaft :)

    Summary, Hmmmm beer :D
