Ross- Porsche has only won one Grand Prix, in 1962 with Dan Gurney driving. As a chassis builder, they have never won an F1 championship. Their engines have, in McLarens.

I love that story, Seth! I've used the pebbles on the window routine in the past too. ;)

The high banking at Daytona has a slight parabolic curvature, certainly not as pronounced as the track you're describing or Monza as we remember it from the movie Grand Prix. The ideal line is the one I took in the video I posted. I took the high line in passing situations. You can see by the position of my steering wheel how the banking controlled how my car tracked.

The warning we received at the drivers meeting was how slipping below the yellow lines at speed could upset the car and throw you back up onto the banking. As this NASCAR announcer said: "What goes down must come up."

The limited view and g-force compression into the seat add to the unique experience.

The NASCAR drivers deserve tons of respect for what they do in close quarters at 200 mph.

That's a beautiful account. Thanks for sharing it! Back when I was a roadie, we spent weeks in Paris. I absolutely fell in love with the place.

    Cheers,

i was not precise enough....porsche engines have won wc's.

there are very few manufacturers who have built the entire car as ferrari does (mostly), so this distinction is a bit singular. whereas engine manufacturers often claim to have 'won the wc' . think honda, mercedes, renault, ford, etc. so, having attended many of those races where mclaren won with porsche engines, that was my thinking.

lamborghini did briefly supply some engines, but they were never much more than backmarkers.

anyway, my point was that porsche should not be lumped in with lamborghini when it comes to racing. in a racing context, i suspect only one company can even be mentioned in the same sentence with ferrari, and that is porsche.

Dan- Very pretty in CdF and the last US 575M. Since found out 141822 was a Euro 575M, but it may have an earlier Assembly Number. If so, yours would still be the last off the assembly line.

Ross, not to quibble, but Mercedes-Benz was winning F! World Championships in 1955 and 56 and pre-WWII in the 1930s before the present F1 existed was winning the functional equivalent, the European Grand Prix in those monster V-12s

Drop dead gorgeous car. I want a set of those 19" modulars so bad... but no bad enough to buy them new through Ricambi.

Well, Lambo actually did for one season in '91 but named it Modena & they supplied the engine plus designed the chassis. Those were during Chrysler days!

They also supplied engines for several other teams like Minardi, Larousse & Lotus which was test driven by Aryton Senna & Mika Hakkinen. A few of them scored podiums.

Lambo also did pretty well in F1 power boats.

Anyway, Ferruccio famously forbid any racing for his company (probably a good idea or they might just bankrupt earlier)

Seriously gorgeous Simon. Would someone be kind enough to show me a pic how your toolkit case is attached to your 550 boot. I need to put mine back to its original state.

    Many thanks

Obviously if you can even consider a Porsche CGT in the same breath as a GTO you're too old school for me to consider your opinion. As far as a somewhat slightly modified generic Porsche look being prettier than a GTO, I totally disagree
