Is this the end of F1?

I used to watch every single practice, qualification, and race. Went to 7 races myself including Monza. In my 42 years, I've watched F1 evolve into an awesome test of man and and machine, skill and technology. Contrast that with what F1 has become today. The magic is gone. Its like watching a completely different racing series. Its like reliving the demise of IndyCar. I tried to watch today. Just couldnt bare it. I'm done...

 

It's not a race anymore. It's who can go the farthest and fastest with the least amount of fuel. Oh, and by the way, the burn rate is also just as important or you will be disqualified.

To me, we don't have drivers anymore. They are just drones where the engineers tell them how fast they can go at any given time or they will burn up too much fuel.

"Slow down now... you know we can't exceed our burn rate! Slower... slower... that's better!"

This is NOT F1 to me. It's an engineering exercise in boredom.

 

Fuel rate regs need to **** off.

Turbo's need to go away too. The cars are so incredibly quiet. I wouldn't pay to go there. It's like going to a rock concert but everyone gets wireless headphones. What the ****?!

I raised the issue of going less green earlier this week. My solution is simple: F1 needs to lie about fuel consumed. Lie how they get their trucks and stuff to other continents (carried by angels who recycle).

Get rid of stupid electric diffs and electric braking. Mechanical for both. We'll see plenty of oversteer with the mechanical diffs.

Add V10/12's in the mix and F1 is back.

 

I'm glad I'm not going this year . F1 has lost its appeal and frankly so has Ferrari as a team. I think they should focus on gt racing and lemans. F1 has become nothing short of a circus for the glitterati .... I'm hoping to change my mind as the season progresses...

Fantastic race and the fact that we have the turbos back is just simply the best.

ERS is complex and the future, good move to have these kinds of engines.

The sound is different, but we'll get used to it.

Way to go F1 and FIA!

 

I reserved opinion till the actual race. I watched the first few laps and then fast forwarded till the end. Not really formula 1. Changes need to come soon or they will loose the audience, except for those who pay to go to lawnmower races.

 

As many others I was extremely disappointed....I've always wanted to go see, actually "hear", and F1 race live and after this morning have no desire.....I guess I'll still watch it but the days of turning the TV up all the way on the starts are over.....I guess this is the future of F1 (sadly)....

 

Never commented before in the F1 section but have been watching F1 since i was about 8 years old in the late 70's.
F1 had the looks and sounds to draw people like me to it. Well, that ship has sailed.

Except for a few makes, the cars are complete disasters in regards to styling and sound. Ferrari would hands down win the world championship in an ugly contest. Hopefully functional styling remains a thing of beauty and Ferrari will need to change the package based on poor race results.

I could take the turbo sound if they could still hit the higher rpm's.

I have always been excited about rule changes and who adapts the quickest and sometimes the smaller teams really surprise us.

This will still happen but who really cares when the cars sound like crap and the worlds most storied constructors car looks like and a mechanical ant eater powered by a lawn mower. Really, since when has a Ferrari F1 car not been a thing of beauty? This is a disaster.

How will this help sell passenger cars? Will they make their next super car with a nose that looks like a truck ran over it.

So disappointed to have to tell people of how the cars used to sound. Not interested in attending races anymore.

 

I don't think we watched the same race. Other than Rosberg, there was tons of action behind him. The cars were also way more reliable than advertised, what did we have, 4 dnf's due to mechanical failure? That's incredible given the amount of new tech in the cars imo. I also loved being able to hear the tires squeel and the other sounds the cars make.

Bunch of 'get off my lawn' old men whining in here, imo.

Ferrari didn't do well, so expect a bunch of negative comments.

IMHO F1 hasn't been better in many years.

 

What a ****ing farce this new formula is. Technology for its own sake, nothing else. This isn't sport, this is engineering masturbation.

I think it is high time F1 is going green. Formula one is supposed to be leading edge technology. If there is any hope of having completely green cars in the future, F1 is the one that can take us there. I am hoping for non fossil fuel cars soon. But to make it work it would be essential to keep the rulebook open for anything but fossil fuels so that the best solution can win. just my 2 cents of radical thinking.......

 

What's not to like:

- awesome race with cars fighting for positions
- changed hacking order, new people up front and leaders out the back or out
- screeching tires
- fishtailing cars
- unpredictable outcome
- relevant technology
- DNFs

The cars look slow and sound awful and a times due to car failure became very spread out - not what formula one needs dare I say - BORING.

Reminds me of diesel sports car racers.

Never mind Moto GP starts soon - now that's racing.

 

lest we all forget, f1 is a business.

it wont matter what any of us think about today's race and the new formula. if the masses start to look elsewhere for their motorsport entertainment, then things might change. if the revenue continues unabated, then nothing will happen, and dissenters can lump it.

and to those that want the envelope to be pushed more towards electric cars, there is a formula for you to watch already. i would prefer that we retain a traditional combustion engine formula, but can accept a hybrid version with the kers. beyond that, it will cease to be formula one, but just a different variation on formula e.

 

It's utterly ridiculous to me trying to make race cars green for a global race event!!!

good grief - think about it. HUNDREDS of people, on DOZENS of aircraft, met with
HUNDREDS of support vehicles - cars and trucks - driving collectively hundreds of
local miles delivering pit gear, pit crews, press, oh, and a race car or two... all for
a race where the cars use a tiny bit less gas and the tires produce a tiny bit less friction...

I say keep all the races in EUROPE - ditch the 747 flights across the globe, and
bring back REAL ENGINES. The fuel savings in JET-A alone would be staggering, and
the race cars would be race cars again, at a VASTLY "more green" rate.

It's all touchy feely feel-good "green initiative" crap and BS for PC reasons, what
they're doing now with all these changes.

I'd say it's on life support. I went from being more excited than I have in years to being pissed and apathetic. The cars look horrible and sound worse. This isn't racing any longer .... it's managed P.C. exhibition. I saw it coming a mile away but I had falsely convinced myself I was wrong.

 

The 2012 season was the best in a while-more over taking and it was relatively tight thru the last race. Last yr was more lopsided but there were still some bright spots like lotus showing some real fight. It's only been one race but the early returns seem to indicate that we are moving further away from 2012. It's only 1 race in the books but hopefully this isn't over even earlier this yr

 

I'm more interested in F1 now than I have ever been. The current formula is the future.
