Agreed. Not sure why these are so flatulent. I do love the turbo/wastegate noises by the actual engine note is too quiet and strangely pitched
The actual exhaust note reminds me of '90s video games that were poorly imitating what F1 cars sound like..............only now these ARE the real sounds. The '80s turbo engines sounded more organic and appealing. Turbo exhaust manifolds are optimized for quick/stable boost and efficient packaging, at the expense of ultimate NA performance and sound. I once had a long tube exhaust mani on my car that gave a terrific wail and peak HP, but was a tight fit and could contribute to boost spikes. When I changed over to a better short tube mani, I lost some of the goodness of the engine sound for the benefit of better overall response. I am confident F1 could create a much better exhaust sound with the right mani, but performance is all that matters to them....and it isn't always sexy (cue the rather....err....phalic nose attachment this year, which I hope goes away..... ).
Well, to me they sound like unhappy, overworked outboards! From now on I'll be calling F1 "Formula Evinrude". None of the announcers asked the viewers to "turn up the volume" at the start... F1 (excuse, FE) is theater ("Theatre..."?), and part of that- a LARGE part- is the sound. Due to the Doppler effect, not so bad on approach, but going away, when the pitch drops... If you were in the pits listening, and you hadn't heard it before, you'd call the driver in, and all the mechanics out, for an emergency pit stop session! Cheers, Rich
in person, i think they will be great. the v8's were way too loud in person. potential ear damage. they just need to find a way to get the sound through the tv. too quiet for tv, as if no sound at all.
I was never really a fan of the V8 sound when comparing them to the V10 but now against the new cars the V8 sound awesome. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHSGzYkauF8]F1 engine sound comparison - 2013/2014 Australian GP - YouTube[/ame]
Seems the guys who pay for the show aren't too happy either. Australian Grand Prix officials complain to F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone that new V6 cars are too quiet - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
The lack of noise was a concern from the start and now those concerns have come to fruition; Imho next year more revs will be allowed, which is an admission that this seasons's ludicrous rev limits was a massive failure. More revs mean more noise, more power, more fuel but I guarantee the earth will not lose its orbit around the sun because of these rules changes.
Turbo cars can sound great. It seems to be the energy recovery systems that are muting the current crop.
But they're not even exploiting the existing limits. With the engine development freeze I don't see how that changes.
The lack of scream comes from 3/4 of the cylinders running at 15/18ths of the previous RPM limits or 0.625 exhaust pulses per second lower <pitch>. They all sound like a ricer with a fart pipe to me.
The sound is crap and it DOES make a difference. Eventually it will probably be all electric or they will run on carbon fiber "Mr. Fusions". And I will be a grumpy old fart complaining about it.
Terrible. Unfortunately, as manufacturers have invested a great deal into developing the current engines, I suspect we will have to wait for the next substantive rule change in 2019 for a proper fix. In the meantime, I wonder if they'll explore some sort of digital manipulation of the sound for the TV audiences. All the best, Andrew.

The V6T sounded okay in the video that Speedcore posted. Perhaps there needs to be changes to the microphone locations on the track and cars for better audio capture for TV audiences.
capturing better audio from a poor sounding source won't make a difference, just higher fidelity bad sound
+1 I suspect Bernie's in deep pow-wow mode with his TV guys right now. I guess they were setup the same as last year, when they had to be careful not to 'hurt' the ears of the poor viewer. Put the mics out closer maybe and we too could hear the 'whooshing, grinding & whistling' etc that most of those that were actually there came to terms with. Cheers, Ian
